What other calibers can be built on a 270 win action?

If you reload then look at the Sherman stuff.

If you don't then look at a .280AI you can buy that ammo off the shelf.

I'd say if you don't reload stick to the .270 Win or .30-06. AFAIK Nosler and Hornady are the only two making .280 AI ammunition at the moment without having to go the custom route for the non-reloader. How many manufacturers make .270 Win and .30-06? IMO if you're going for factory ammunition those two are really hard to beat.

Good idea "if" there's enough barrel dameter at the end of the barrel it's easy to do. I've had several barrels rebored by JES Reboring in Oregon, it was like $225 return shipping to my door. The rifle barrel had to be 9/16ths on the end to rebore to 35 Whelen from a 30-06. Reboring is a great, inexpensive route to go, all three barrels that JES did for me all shoot!

JES F'd up my buddies .35 Whelen, wouldn't believe my buddy either when he said the bore was undersized. Barrel split and disintegrated the stock shooting factory loads that JES told him to try before he'd look at his work again. JES never made it right, he never gave my buddy what he paid for or refunded the money. IMO when things work JES is okay, but his CS when there is an issue is severely lacking. I'll rebarrel before I rebore using JES.

Wow I really surprised to hear that. I respect your opinion on this, I would not be promoting him if this happened to me. He did two Ruger 77s from 30-06 to 35 Whelen and a BLR from .308 Winchester to .358 Winchester and all three rifles shoot MOA consistently. Both my son and I shoot and hunt with them every year. If you do a searc on this forum, or on Google I know that there are many other companies that rebore with excellent results. Thanks for sending me this response.

What does reach out there a little more mean? I have a .270 AI with 30" Lilja 3G 1:8" that propel a 175 Matrix VLD at 2993 FPS MV (current accuracy load, have reach near 3100 FPS with H4831SC but group opened up and with pressure signs), 1654 FPS and 1063 FT-LBS of energy at 1100.
I was thinking of purchasing a McGowen 26" barrel 1:8 twist for my M70 push feed .270cal. I don't reload, so I wanted to use the Hornady Precision Hunter cartridge. My goal was to have a rifle capable of 900yds with 1000fpe. Any thoughts?

I'm old and boring. Based on the owner decisions and actions posts. Absolutely verify it really "needs" a barrel and if it does suggest he just put a thinner 24" barrel chambered in that terribly performing 270 WIN. I probably would go with a 1/9 at the fastest twist rate.

Old thread revival lol. The only 270 Win ammo I see is the 145 ELDX and I don't think it'll do it. 1-8" would be for the heavier class of bullets which would probably require handloading. You can get some pretty impressive performance out of the 270 win with a fast twist. but you'll need the 165 plus weight bullets and handloading at this point.

Thanks. Probably best to purchase a 300 Win Mag. I see the new CVA Cascades have solid reviews.

280AI just doesn't hold enough powder. I was a 7 STW person. With the advent of modern heavy .277 pills it has made it a real contender. I have a 29 inch 270AI that has hammered some elk and Bison.

Longer barrels are free HP and the real fun of AI's is that you can grab any box of 270 off the self and use them:)

Since you do not handload, you will not benefit from a faster twist barrel since most if not all factory ammo requires a 1:10 " twist.

My Son's buddy has a model 70 in 270 that needs a rebarrel. What other calibers could we go with on that action to make it reach out there a little more?
You could do a 6.5 RPM or 6.5-284 Norma to get into the 6.5 game without machining the bolt face. A 280 Ackley will also fit with no bolt change and closely matches 7mm Rem performance. If you want to go wildcat a 6.5/06 is unique, I've heard the barrels don't last long on them though.

A 6.5x06 will give the same performance as the 6.5x284 or PRC. Difference is the 6.5x06 has unlimited easy , inexpensive brass available. I doubt game will know what the brass case is behind the bullet. I've had a 6.5x06 for years, & is a pure delight. Simple to load for. Run a 25-06 or 30-06 case thru the 6.5x06 FL sizer, load & shoot. No neck turning required. Simple.

If you reload and would like something unique/different take a look at the .270 Ackley Improved with a 1:8 twist barrel. Sort of like a .270 WSM on steroids. Otherwise I would seriously look at the .280 Ackley Improved.

300 sherman sends 215's around 2950
That is smoking hot. I'm not throwing shade. I just want to share that I'm sending 180's at 3050 fps from a 24" barrel with R26.

A faster twist 270 win could load the heavy 277 boowits.
I really think this is a good option. I would get brass, dies and bullets first. Find the oal that leaves the bottom of the bearing surface even with the neck. The tell your smith you want it throated like that in an 8 twist.

You could do a 6.5 RPM
Another good option that may need some throating.

….or you ca pick the Sherman and the throating is right on the original reamer. All good choices.

Just referencing reloading data. Shows the 300 ss @ 2953 with the 208 ELD-M, 7 grains less weight but much more bearing surface, and the 300 Sherman also has a little more case capacity. Also, your using a 24", I specifically said "peak performance", which alone would would mean 26"-28" barrel. If you had a 28", you would likely be in the neighborhood of 2950 with a 215, and around 3150 with 180's.

Also not throwing shade, just referencing available data.
