.338 lapua improved on ti action

om I've done some digging and seen you should not build one on a 700 action. That being said what about a lapua improved on a pierce to action and bolt? Wanna build a light weight mountain rifle and was looking for a Norma mag but I already have two lapua improved one for fire forming and the other is my brother long range rig. So it would be nice to have the same brass. I could load a lighter bullet for some speed and have a packable rig. Would this be a safe action?

Safe, light, and expensive. Also a shoulder stimulator and possible flinch enhancer...but to each their own. What caught my attention is that you're fireforming brass in yet another 338LMAI? Did some research before doing any shooting with mine. Long story short: I load Lapua and/or Peterson 338 Lapua brass into my 338LMAI (40*) with 100 GN of RL33 using 265 GN Barnes and GM215M primers and alas out comes custom brass ready to process. Never had a bit of problems and even those first firings are accurate. However, I do anneal after every firing which might be why my cases look like unfired brand new brass when they come out of the SS tumbler.

I have a 7-2oz. 338 NM,26''braked,sure you seen it .And seen many your post,never had problem and put young shooters in it that got there firsts with it and 500-800 range.I wanted a lapua and taked in to NM.Mines ten years old and that is the trend right now many makers going light in bigger mags.Good componants and they shoot,mines got alot of game under it now.I wish i had more juice,you like the +p carlock makes in bullpup

Lone peak razor Ti 338 action will be around 27 oz with a Ti rail. $1600, 1.06 tenon

Defiance Ultra light ~27oz
$1400, 1.06

Curtis Helix ~35oz
$1200, 1.1

Kelbly tactical $1100
~35oz with a steel rail, 1.06

Bat HR $1400 ~35oz, 1.1

APS w steel rail $1400 ~44oz, 1.1

Ti actions can be expensive and will only save you 2-3 oz over some of the lightweight steel actions.

Lots of good options now days. There are many more but these are some I would take a look at. And if you plan on pushing things hard you might stick with actions that offer a 1.1" tenon.

That's what I like about it. I also do the same shoots factory lapua loads pretty accurately in mine.

Ok thanks guys I see lots of threads about not doing it on a 700 action but I figured the custom actions would be stronger.
I have a ti action 6.5 from pierce I really like. I have them go all out to save weight so I could add it where I want. I want to make this one a twin to that. But large enough to hunt big game. Top it with a March 2.5-25 and I'd have a pretty versatile package.

Very interesting. I have been looking at the same project. I too am going through my options. Pierce does not seem to have much info out there on their specs. I see they have some big actions now as well. Big and light do not go together though

Well if you think Peirce is a nice action then you should look at Lone Peak Razor TI 338 action they are better action IMHO, and they are speced for what you want.

I could be wrong but I don't think Defiance will do a 338 on this action - Defiance Ultra light ~27oz

I like the look of the lone peak for sure. Pierce's new website is not very good that's for sure no real specs. But I have one and I do like it. They did the whole rifle and it really does shoot. Plus they have access to the reamer used for my other ones. And to make it better they are only an hour from me.
Not saying I'm not willing to go elsewhere as if a better product exists then of course. But if the pierce action is build to the same spec as the lone peak .338. Then it would be safe. I'm looking mainly at safety. So if lone peaks is built for it than a 700 footprint can be safe. Just wonder if the pierce is the same as doesn't seem to be much different in the .338 lone peak from the standard ti. Maybe tenon?
Recoil on this may be rough but lighter Bullets and a brake from Kirby should calm it down to manageable levels.

It's not "action strength" on the 700 that worry some people, it's what's left of the rim on the bolt after being opened up to a Lapua case head. The custom actions will have a larger diameter bolt to compensate for it. But they are all plenty "strong"...even a Savage!

They have a .590 bolt for this action. I have several buddy's with 300 Norma's and a 338 lapua built on the Deviant, which is close to the same action but less of the rail has been milled off and it weighs a little more.

A Steel action will be stronger than a Titanium one.
