I am beginning to reload for my Remington Model 700 7 mm RUM. I have used a COL gauge and it tells me if I seat the 160 bullet just short of the lands only a very small amount of the bullet is in the case. I have measured several factory rounds and they are way short of my estimated seating depth.
Is it possible that in the gun the bullet will be seated way , way short of the lands?
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure from the factory the 7RUM comes with a pile of freebore. You're stuck loading to a max mag length which if memory serves is 3.68" or so.

Had three. Load so bullet's bearing surface makes full contact with neck and work up a load.

First one shot 140 nosler ballistic tips. Second one used 168 hybrid. Third used 180 hybrids. I just couldn't keep one for long. Friends talked me out of all of them.

I might help to use Berger hybrid bullets as they tend to shoot well with just about any seating depth.

I played with one of these when they were first introduced on the market and found mine to be finicky about seating depth. I started with the factory C.O.A.L and worked out .010" at a time until I found the sweet spot, it was exhausting though. As I recall I went through four powders (RL22, Retumbo, IMR 7828, and H1000) and 5 different bullets until I found a consistent sub MOA load. I don't remember the powder charge offhand (I do remember that it was well below the maximum) but it was Retumbo and a 160 gr Accubond that worked best. In the end, the reduced powder charge, meh velocity, and heavy recoil wasn't worth it to me so I got rid of it and eventually went to 280 AI and have never looked back.

Yes, that gun will have some jump. I load for a friend with the same rifle, his gun really likes 175 gamekings and a max load of 7828.
