I just sent in a Remington SS Model SE7EN (7mm SAUM) to have the DBM job done. New Boyds grey satin laminate thumbhole stock for right-hand action, left-hand shooter - with Pachmayr Decelerator pad. Plus the original black synthetic RH stock too - in case I wanna sell it later on LRH. :D - It came with a 22-inch barrel, but now has a new 24-incher. :D

Beautiful rifle and elk! I'm building a second rifle in 7 wsm. Can't decide on 26 or 24". Intent is for a light weight hunting rifle.
My rifle is certainly not light weight, with the scope and bi-pod it is 11+ pounds, but it shoots lights out, so I pack it around. Nice thing is if I'm hunting with another person or my sons, we just agree to shoot that gun, so we can spread the load out. Someone carries the spotting scope or game bags and the other guy pack the gun. Fun Stuff!!

If your looking at a 7mm, I would recommend the Remington 700 M40 Long Range - 7mm Rem. Mag.
It comes with the 26" Heavy Barrel.

I can get 3,350 ft/sec with 72 gr RE26 but they didn't group very well in my 25" Bartlein barrel. I settled on 67.1 RE23 and get about .35moa at 400 yds. Velocity is 3,185 ft/sec.
What load are you using with the 143 Hammers? Group size?

I have a rem 700 short action that I would love to turn into a 7mm short mag of some sort. Would love to be able to shoot the hornady 180 eld-m right around the 3000 fps mark from a 24 or 25 inch barrel if possible. It's a 308 win so I know I would have to open the bolt face or buy a new bolt and have the action milled for a wyatts center feed box, etc., which i'm ok with, I was gonna have the action trued while at the smith anyway. This rifle/cartridge combo would also be my first foray into reloading so it would need to not be too complicated of a process. Thinking the wsm loaded to 2.95" would fit and be my best chance of accomplishing this other than the 7ss which may be over my head in terms of being new to reloading. Also, i'm a little worried about the feeding as it will be from a hinged floorplate/bdl style internal mag.

Northland Shooter's Supply can furnish you a 7SAUM barrel. I don't know about the wait time.

If you force a 180 eldm to under a 3 inch coal your eating all your gains in the larger WSM case and using crappier brass, your even compromising a SAUM at that length but at least you have solid brass options!

Yeah it's a tough choice and there isn't a perfect solution. But it's a good thread and got me thinking about 7mm RM vs 280 AI. No hijack intended.

It's likely that no further discussion is required, in which case we recommend starting a new thread. If however you feel your response is required you can still do so.
