What are some good options for a medium sized pack in the $100 - 150 range?

How important is fitting?

In that price range, something used like an REI XT85, Dana or Lowe Alpine. Fit is extremely important, so take the time to find one that is in your size range with the necessary adjustability to precisely tailor it to you.

What CI are you looking for, and do you need meat hauling capability? If so Alps has one on Amazon that has good reviews for that price. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004R7L7YU/?tag=lrhmag19-20
If not camofire has had some Mystery Ranch day hunting type packs on sale recently. I just bought my first MR (scapegoat 25) at my local scheels on sale for around 160. I love that pack.

Hobie,
You will not find a decent backpack for $150. unless it's on a big sale.
I suggest you buy a good book on backpacking tat will tell you what to look for in a pack AND other gear.

What you should consider:
1. internal or external frame?
2. Capacity (medium is around 4,000 cu. in. or 50 liters)
3. Torso length MATCHES your torso length (Some internal frame packs have adjustable harness lengths)
4. Padded hip belt size and comfort.
5. Lift straps above the shoulder straps.

When you think you have found the right pack take it home, load it up with 45 lbs. of weight(books, etc.) and walk around for about an hour, adjusting to fit. If it is still fairly comfortable after an hour keep it.

Alps outdoorz is a decent company with some value. The commander is fairly inexpensive with bag and frame.
It's not going to compare to a higher end bag but if you take care of it it can last and is better than a jansport backpack
