Need a good hunting bullet for 30 06

Op picked his load a page or two ago - but yes 180 partition is a do it all hammer- but to 300 yards so is a 180 round nose cup and core - for half the price.

Been watching this from the beginning and have killed so many depredation and herd management animals i wont even mention and with almost every bullet mentioned here from .243, .260, 280AI, 30-06 and 7RM. And never have had any consistently 100% kill like lighting struck as the Hammer Bullet!! It's softness is unique to copper bullets. Cup and core entry hydro static shock at impact and copper exits.

Thanks all. Amazing how many different choices there are. Going to go with 165g Accubonds and IMR-4350.

good choice....the last deer I shot with these out of my .06 did a back flip and was DRT at about 130 yards. I'll have to look and see if I can find the video.

Mabe I will have to try them. But I've always had Barnes drop them in their Tracks when shot with Barnes x bullets. Must be where you place the bullet...

I've had both experiences with Barnes on deer and antelope. If it's heart-lungs they don't move far, if it's a double lung they tend to run a little, although I had a double lung shot antelope (Dead center of chest cavity shot, between the 4th and 5th ribs from the rear) that ran over 400 yards in a semi-circle before she expired, and her body cavity was a lake of blood. I don't know how she managed that, chalked it up to reaction of the individual animal.

Although at the end of the day the result is the same... meat in the freezer.

I shot my mule deer buck this past season with a .30-06 190 ABLR Winchester factory load. Hit him twice in the chest in rapid succession and he still managed to stumble around in circles for 2-3 minutes. This was at less that 150 yards. He was essentially dead right there, but he was not giving up the ghost easily and just stumbled backwards in circles until he could not hang on any longer. Every animal responds differently is my point of the day I guess :)

Loading for a hunting buddy. Rem 700, 30 06, 24 inch barrel 1:10. Most shots will be 200 yds and under on deer. I'm thinking something in the 165 range that won't break the bank. He's a good shot so DRT would be nice. Not going to go with Bergers. I'de like an exit .I have on hand 180g Barnes TSX and maybe Sierra GK hollow points. Was never happy with Game Kings close in. Looked like they were shot with an ice pick. Mostly want to see them print well at 100yds. Powders i'm flexible on. Remember this isn't your custom rifle. ;)
I use Sierra Game King 165 gr SBT with IMR 4350 powder, Winchester std primers and Hornady and Winchester brass once fired from my rifle, cases trimmed and bullet seated .002 off the lans of my OTS Browning Hunter A-Bolt 30-06 and can shoot inside a dime @200yds on sandbags at the range. I've taken Elk, Mule Deer, White Tail Deer and antelope with the same load. Ranges varied between ~50 to 320 yds. Most all have been DRT.

I see a few here talking game kings. I've tried the 1820's. I'm pretty sure they were and they were accurate. But as I mentioned earlier exit wound with no expansion. Not close in like I have shots for anyway.I forget what rifle my friend was shooting but experienced the same issue. Running a long way at dark\beer 30 in the evening isnt fun. Truly I like dead as soon as possible just for the ethics.

What do they say.... Location, Location, Location.... It's all about shot placement. Aim small - miss small. As I have grown older, I've passed on more shots than I have taken because I didn't have the shot I wanted. Guess I am getting lazy too...I don't want to have to drag them too far any more... :) In my experience, I've found that being a bit off from where I should have placed the shot has always made a difference in how the animal reacts after the shot. If the shot is good and the energy from the bullet is expended into the boiler room properly, they will be DRT or will typically never go very far (a jump or maybe a couple steps and then DRT). It's those shots that have hit a shoulder or have been a bit forward or high or behind where I thought I aimed that have resulted in an animal going some distance. I've read so many articles written about "the best" hunting bullets and while there is a slight difference, a good well placed shot with almost any "hunting" bullet will result in animals DRT after the shot. I have always focused on accuracy and precision. I believe that is more important than trying to find the best hunting bullet. My suggestion is to pick a hunting bullet and then focus on the load to obtain the best accuracy you can achieve with your rifle and then practice and take the time to make the best shot possible. Happy hunting!

180 grain boat tail bonded premium bullet a la accubond, interbond, a-frame.

Strong, heavy bullets for the best combination of penetration and expansion regardless of hitting bone or not.

Difference in bullet drop over most practical hunting distances is negligible and wind has less of an effect.

However as mentioned previously, even the best bullets can't turn a bad shot into a good one. Shot placement is key.
