This question is aimed at those that don't have private property. We have a public outdoor range 30 minutes from our house, but it only goes to 100 yds. For longer range shooting, there are two private clubs, and both of them are 1 hour away.

Is this typical? I'd like to get some longer range practice, but a 2-hour roundtrip is rather unappealing.

I shot at a public range once and hope I never have to do it again. I drive 25 minutes to shoot. I can shoot out to 1500 yards there. It's public land ppl shoot on.
I used to have to only drive 10 minutes to family property where I could shoot out to a mile.

20 minutes to 100 yard range. 45 minutes to a 200 yard range. An hour and a half to a non range place to set up and shoot long distances. Of course long distance to me is 400 yards because I never have time to drive out there and practice on a regular basis.

I'm pretty lucky. I drive 45 minutes to a small and rarely crowded private range but it's only 300 yards. My preferred spot for load development.

I can drive 25 minutes to a public range to 600 and about the same to a private range to 1k. I just joined the private range which can be very busy at times with compitiions and the 1k is not always available based on who's using the range.

It's wasn't always this way. When I lived down in So Cal I'd drive 70 miles to shoot out to 1k yards. And that was on a crowded range.

I drive for 5 minutes and I can shoot on BLM from 100 yds out, no real max range. In several places, I can see for 5 miles or more. Within 5 minutes of my house, there are 6 or 7 places I can set up my targets and practice canyon wind shooting, head/tail winds, direct crosswind, up/down drafts, up/down hill, etc. But, I live in the fantastic state of Wyoming. Also, there is a public range with a $35 annual fee that I almost never see anyone at, about 5 minutes away also. I only go there to do load development from the indoor bench during winter time, they have a wood stove I'll stoke up and shoot next to. I think it goes back to like 350 yards or something, but I only use the 100 and 200 yard target stands. Anything farther, and I just go on public land.

With no traffic, 3minute and the game is on. i love my local gun range its old school. a huge political forums and you'll learn tons of things there.

Its 20 min. to the county run public range, only 200yds, never go. 50min to a club range that has steel to 600, never been. I have one public access spot (clear cut) can shoot to 700yds, its 45min. Another public access area, depending how you set up can reach to 1100yds, its 45min the other direction. Before we moved I was 30 min from a couple places to shoot over 1200. That's 1 1/2 hrs away now.

20 minutes to a free 200 yard range which is pretty busy at times and 35 minutes to a private 1200 yard range that has a yearly membership fee which is well worth the cost.
