Is anyone shooting a 270?

I have always had really good results with a 270. I'm thinking about building a 270 weatherby or 270 wsm. Anyone using these anymore? The 150 ABLR or 170 Berger Has a high BC
I shoot a 270 wsm - has turned into one of my favorite guns. I shoot the 145gr eldx's

I've been shooting a .270 Winchester Remington 700 ADL for 45 yrs. now. I bought it new when I was 14, and have never felt the need for anything else. It has been VERY accurate, and killed everything I have shot with it. First deer was 500 yds. No problem. Never had more than a 4X scope on it either, although my eyes are getting a little old these days. Never shot an elk with it, because I use my bow for that. I like the 140 gr. Hornady spbt as it has nearly the same energy as the 150 gr. but a bit less recoil, and is as accurate as I can shoot. My son has a .260 Remington that I really like, and I considered swapping the barrel for a .260, but after looking at the ballistics I decided to keep the .270. It out shoots the 6.5's enough to keep it. Never did like the 7mm Mag. or bigger. The .270 does the job, and I don't care much for more recoil.

I am an optimist. I believe that the 270 Winchester or maybe something like a 270/08 could be a fine long range target rifle but with two big ifs.

The first big if: If a skilled gunsmith had the right barrel and action and stock and put all these things together properly for a talented and dedicated shooter.

The second big if: If there were a supply of great target bullets in .277.

There is no magic about the .22 caliber or the 6 mm caliber or the .30 caliber. There is a good selection of target bullets for these calibers and shooters who shoot them a lot. I think there is nothing wrong at all with the .277 or the .257 other than a lack of good target bullets and shooters that shoot them.

Using Retumbo I'm getting 2980 fps with the 170s so not only is it flatter than my 7 mag it hits harder too.
Not sure what bullet you're using in your 7mm to make that conclusion..
A fast twist properly throated 7 wsm will send a 180 ELD-M at 3050 fps, no comparison and very similar recoil to the 270 wsm.
I've had both, and while the 270 wsm is a great round the 7's just do it better.
Not knocking the 270, but that's simply why it has less love

I just finished up with the 140 game changer for 3140 and sub .5moa from a factory vangard 270. Es is 10 Once I got the right pressure I was able to run 130's at 3177 es 4 for 5 shots. This is with Rl26 If you take the 145eldx and run it with Rl 26. You would change that post showing 2925 to 3125 and the difference is clearly significant.
I have an 8tw 277 barrel and a 8.5 30 cal barrel. One will be this year and one next.

I'm going back to the 270 bullets again from the 7mm, I've just seen more consistent results on the game, been all over the board on 7mms and I'm definitely not happy with the 195 and the 180 eldm, the 180 Berger hunting is the best performance I've had and there just no advantage over what I was seeing with the 270s.

First rifle I purchased, a Ruger M77 in .270 Win. Still have it, shoot it and love it. Can't seem to wear out the barrel after untold rounds through it. Still shoots quite well 43B70328-BFEA-4519-B2DF-EC02EF3A876B.jpeg

I shoot a 270 sherman. The 170 Berger has been extremely consistent on muleys from 100 yards to 575 yards in the last couple years at 3100fps. It's taken 4 in that time. I did it to be different after the 170 came out and have been thoroughly pleased.

I've killed more than a few critters with 270's and 7mm's, couldn't disagree more with that statement. Not trying to deter anyone from a 270 though.. Whatever tickles your pickle
The ELD-M's are killers, especially the 180.
I shot my Muley at 430 yards with that bullet this year and the terminal performance was awesome! Much greater wound channel than the last whitetail I shot at 70 yards with a 150 from my 270 WSM.
The 170 EOL may be more comparable, but I can't imagine a word where it's gonna do better..
Again, whatever makes you happy at the end of the day.
I thinks 6.5's 270's and 7mm's are all outstanding choices for long range deer and elk hunting

The 270's get a lot more love than it looks, you'd be surprised how many 270 WSM's are out there. I've rebarreled so many 7 Mags to faster twist 270 WSM's that I've lost count, I have three reamers just for that one round and I have exactly zero 7 mag reamers, zero 7 WSM reamers, two 1 SAUM reamer then one 28 nosler and two 7-300 Win reamers.
The 270 has a small handful of very, very good bullets, that's all it needs though, it doesn't need 15 different options to find one that seems to work well in your rifle.

What I really like about the 270 WSM is shooting a 170 Berger your getting excellent ballistics, recoil that doesn't need a brake but enough sauce to taco any elk you want inside 1000 yards. It's the perfect balance for a big game rifle!!
You can throw some 110 gr bullets in it for coyote season and run them out 3600+ fps like a death laser too!!

I meant bingo on this.

Also out of a properly set up 270 WSM a 170 Berger is a whole lot more than a little improvement over the trusty ole 270 win in my safe. I have killed more than a few tons of critters with my 270 win. But at even moderate ranges the WSM on a long action with proper throat is flat out superior.
Had I to do it over and really wanted to stick to a short action, there is nothing I know of that can touch a 270 Sherman in .277! Very very near what a WSM can do in a LONG action... plus you get to talk with Rich, and have a cool *** gun!
