The vihtavuori.. 500's are all double base propellants specifically for added velocity. And I've used them with great success,that said the double base is nitroglycerin added to traditional single base powder in order to squeeze a little extra velocity out of your normal load. The nitro- can have bad effects on barrels due to it burning so hot so quickly. So say it's very caustic & corrosive...but it will get you faster fps...trade off is for you to decide
What powder are you burning to get that velocity with 212 gr Bullets? My 30 Nosler, a M48 Nosler Factory Model gets 2940 with factory Nosler Trophy Grade 210 LR Accubonds. I bought factory ammo because they were just about the same price as the unfired brass, which I can't understand. Now that I have some brass I want to load some 212ELD-X, some 215 Bergers, some 210 LR Accubonds and some 200 Barnes LR X Bullets. I've got some H1000, Retumbo, 7828SSC & IMR-4813.
Mine absolutely stoned my Bull @ 300 yards facing me head on. 210 LR Accubond didn't exit but I'm sure it stopped somewhere in his paunch. We used the gutless method to harvest him because we definitely didn't want to open him up!
I seriously doubt you are going to get those speeds in a M48. Isn't your mag box only 3.4"? My three 30Noslers are 3.6"-3.7".
I'm using H-1000. It's a custom chamber, so that might help a little as well.
My chronograph shows this speed (Chrony Gamma) You are free to seriously doubt all you wish. Maybe my chronograph is faulty but that's what it reads 12 feet from the muzzle. This speed is with Nosler Trophy Grade Factory Ammo, but I'll be loading for it from here on out. Like always, I'll try several different bullets and the usual suspects in the powder range and am definitely going to look into R 26 for my 30 Nosler and R 33 for my 338-375 Ruger.
First I've had two shooting chronos and I don't believe a thing they say. Second reread the posts. You asked how he was getting 3100. I said I doubt you'll get 3100 at 3.4". I'll stand by that statement. His mag box and oal is most likely 3.6-3.7" as are mine as I stated.
Thanks for the reply. I've got H1000 on the shelf and am gonna get some R 26 to play with as well. I've got some 210 gr Berger VLD Hunting Bullets, 212 gr Hornady ELD-X Bullets and some Nosler 210 gr LR Accubonds to try. Sounds like I need to get some 215 gr Bergers, too. And for hunting, I must try some 200 gr Barnes LR X Bullets as they've been very accurate for me in everything else I've pushed em out of. The factory loads I shot grouped 2 1/2" @ 400 yards during Nosler's barrel break-in protocol. I'm extremely confident that I can improve on that quite a bit with some experimenting at the Rock Chucker. I'll have to measure my magazine to see if my gunny might be able to open it up a bit. I haven't seen any reason to doubt my chronograph before as it's never given me any outlandish velocities. Which brand do you run? Thanks for the reply
Shooting chronos change with sunlight. I've moved to magneto speed. It is much more dependable but I only use mine after load development to get a solid velocity.
I just measured OAL on my 30 Nosler with 212 ELD-X. 3.6225"
I like H-1000 because it's been clean and temp stable.
Retumbo can get you a little more speed than H1000, but it just seems like a dirty powder.
I've never ran R26. It should get some speed. I have no idea on temp stability, but running R19 in a different rifle years ago gave me some issues.
