holy crap that's some fine shooting!!
After I had it built, My smith James Appleyard ended up building 5 more just like it. Everyone of them ended up shooting great.

I use a .325 wsm which is the same case but necked to 8mm. My pet load is a 200 gr. nosler accubond with H4350 powder. Chronograph 2870 fps out of the muzzle and still going at 2609 fps at 200 yd. with 2766 ft/lb energy. Not the fastest by any means but very accurate out of my rifle and gives a nice thump on elk. Shot a cow grazing at 300 and tipped her over right there but then it was a lucky shot that drove through the heart. Others have been lung shot and never went too far. Elk are tough though and you can count on someone telling horror stories of those that got away after a good hit. My dad taught me to keep hitting them with lead until they were down. He always hunted with an old 30-40 Krag (back in the 1950's) and I don't recall him ever losing one. I like bigger slower rather than smaller faster but that is for another thread.
What powder are you using

Why does it have to be 300 WSM? Why does it have to be 20 inch barrel? Why large game? What is longest distance? Are we talking 1 mile, 1500m, 1200m, 1000m, 500m, 250m etc?????

That's what I have but unfortunately no good hunting for this beast here in Oregon. This rifle was built for Montana sheep

Agree totally. Not that I'm unhappy with it in a short action as it seems like the magazine may be the first factor limiting COAL in some rifles. But I've spoken to a couple of people who had a WSM built on a standard length action with proper throating for longer cartridge lengths and heavier bullets, and the numbers they've quoted were impressive.
What can you say? It is what it is! And if quality 165's and/or 168's get the results you seek on game - which mine seem to do at respectable distances - then I think Winchester accomplished their goal of delivering greater firepower from a short action hunting rifle. I'm not sure if they ever envisioned the WSM's providing bench-rest-grade accuracy, but with reasonable loading practices it's plenty accurate for the game one should realistically consider using it on. I've also seen others have pretty good results with the better grades of flat base heavies where the shorter bullet allowed for more flexibility in seating depth.
Bottom line: I think the 300 WSM does what it's supposed to do. If anyone feels the need for more velocity to reach out with heavies, there are other more accommodating calibers like the good old 300 WinMag (still wins matches), the potent-as-ever 300 Weatherby and of course the 300 RUM.
I like sports cars, but when I'm pulling a trailer of firewood my pickup truck just makes more sense...

Just WHICH Berger bullet are you using? There are several.
I have a bunch of the 210 VLDs ca 2009 with no other designation.
How suited are these to hunting use in my LSG Rem/Douglass 300 WSM using 60 grns H4350. What I have are Winchester cases, carefully sorted by weight (after fire-forming and trimming, of course).
The only 215gr bullet Berger makes.
