300 WSM

Your correct. If using a Sammi spec reamer you will have a hard time getting the correct jump on your bullet while maintaining the ability to feed outa a box mag or internal mag. I've used different reamers with much less freebore so I can load the high bc bullets mag length. It does decrease powder capacity but with h4350 I haven't found that a problem like I have with different powders. For a factory chambered 300 wsm I'd probably shoot the tangent ogive 190 to 200gr sierra bullets as the secant ogive 215 Berger is really picky about seating depth while the tangent ogive bullets usually aren't nearly as picky.

I disagree about the 215 being picky. The Berger 215 is a HYBRID, and in my experience with VLDs (Berger, JLK or Hornady) in my 300WSM (Savage 12BVSS 1 in 10, 26") it is the least picky and easiest VLD I have ever reloaded. I have moved my initial seating depth from 3.017 to 2.948 in preparing for use in a detachable magazine and have no issues on performance, ballistics, accuracy, precision (or terminal ballistics 350 yards) out to 1,000 yards. Nor have I seen any signs of excessive pressure. Maybe I am a one off exception, but from Broz's post on the 215, which one should really take time to thoroughly read through, I don't think so. I am currently on my 3rd box of 250 bullets of the 215 HYBRID.

The 215 Berger may very well be the least picky of the Vdl bullets but the tangent ogive bullets by design are just less picky. I've shot out 3 barrels on the 215s. When the 215s groups start to open up I can usually get by with the 220 sierras for awhile before I have to rebarrel. I haven't had much luck at setting back the barrels after shooting the 215s so I just have it rebarreled. My brother has an fn patrol rifle and my dad has a rem 700 both chambered in 300 wsm. Neither one has the mag length for the 215 Berger, esp the fn seated at 12 thou jump which is where it shot best.

But, I'll bet the FN would be fantastic with the 230 OTM loaded to 2.950" to 3.010" with a stout dose of RL26.

Maybe maybe not. Berger recommends a 1 in 9 twist for the 230 otm. The fn has a 1 in 10t and is pretty short barreled to boot. It it stabilizes it would prob be fine

Exactly my thoughts. I lucked out and ran across 16lbs of RL26 a month ago. My 300WSM should be ready in April. Built on a long action and throated for a COAL of 3.250. Thoughts on charge weight and velocity w/ a 26" barrel?

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming. Sorry for the derailment OP.

Berger made some updates and it is no longer the case ...

I've fired hundreds of both the 230 hybrids from 10 twists since their introduction. Never a problem.

I'd expect the load to end up around 66 grains producing somewhere between 2850 and 2900 fps in a 26" bbl

I love the 300WSM, my favorite all around caliber.

The chamber I am running was throated for the 208-AMAX, so not fitting in a short action. Mine is built on a long action Atlas action. I'm currently running the 200 ELD-X. IMO the perfect balance, running 2850 FPS, using H4350 and have a 24-inch tube on it. 1:10 twist too.

I think the idea that the 300WSM is a short action cartridge has not done it any favors. I made some test rounds before I built mine, was a few years ago, but I think I had to go back to the 165 grainers to get into what I consider optimal seating depths.

which 300wsm bullet and weight has the best chance of taking down large game at the longest distance out of a 20" barrel?
165 Nosler BT shoot great (.5 moa) out of my 22" 1:12 and work great on whitetails. Pass through at 550 yds. I will shoot an Accubond or such on tougher game. I have always been well satisfied calling the bullet makers for an opinion on selection. Hope this helps.

Mine is built on a LA with loaded rounds @ 3.194" OAL. I shoot 69grs of R-26 with a 215 Berger at 2960fps in a 26" barrel. I have a 20" barrel I'm going to build on a SA to run suppressed. I'm going to build my own magazine to get the longest mag box I can. It should be about 3.17" and hopefully my loaded rounds will only have to be about .050" shorter then they are on a LA.
