Hey guys ive been thinking of building a hyper velocity hunting rifle. Something similar to what Ferguson used to build. I have a rem 700 mag action I was planning on using. Ive been looking around but coming up with little info on the subject. What I kind of had in my head for a build was a 284 jazz with a 28in slow twist barrel. Was hoping to push 120-130 class bullets as close to the 4,000fps range as possible. The goal would be to zero rifle for say 300yds and still be able to hold on at 500yds. Looking for an extremely fast flat shooting rifle. Elk would be the biggest target and that would be rare. I have bigger guns id rather use for them. More or less used for deer and antelope in the plains. I am intetested in ideas from anybody who has any knowledge or experience with a similar setup. If i get my ducks in a row and a solid build plan. I plan to talk to Nathan at SSG about doing my build. I havent ran it past him yet. Been a lack of free time on my part. Nathan built me a 300wm a couple years ago an it is very impressive. I appreciate any suggestions youd have for me.
Thanks,
Adam

I did that years ago and did learn one thing you need to keep in mind. Dont hit any bone bigger than a rib. I have exploded deer worse than shooting a rabbit with a swift hitting bone doing this. The bone explodes just like a soft cup and core bullet will and will shred an animal. Shot a big 10 point buck one time and broke 3 legs. Tore up an 8 point even worse. However keep it in the ribs broadside and you will get what you want.

Could I ask what you had for a build? What had and what youd change if you did it again?

I wouldn't do it again, with current tech. Really limits the shots you can take. You can approach 4000 with many with lite bullets. I would use solid copper. I tried it with an STW and lite bullets and an Ackley improved 8mm magnum. Both loaded way too hot. The 8 was with 175 gr and it was a bad idea. I think if I wanted to try the concept again I would use a smaller gun. Maybe start with a 26 nosler or a 6-300 why and 100gr copper bullets. Might not be quite as destructive.

I just have standard length 700 long action. Limited on case length on some of the big boys. Figured a 284 jazz will give me the most case capacity in that action without major work or money. I have a savage mag LA I am planning a 6.5x300wby build at the moment.

Action length will be fine with little bullets...only with long VLDs is when you'd run into issues.

I call that type of hunting rifle a "Laser" . Back in the pre-dialing days I used to shoot a 257 wby with 100 grain bullets at 3780. The 6.5-300 wby or 26 Nosler with a 100 grain should be at or close to 4000.

I think you could do the 6.5-300 with a 30 inch barrel and be there. You could get there with a 7RUM, but experience would make me want to try it with a .257 or 6.5. Decent penetration and hopefully less energy to displace less bone. That is a big issue and really limits your shots.

I've got a 6-06AI in progress too. It's a 30in 7.5 twist hoping for 103-107s close to 4k. Just looking for a bit more bullet. My 6.5x300wby will be a 28in 8 twist for 140 class bullets. I just think 100ish grains pushing a 120gr 7mm would be crazy flat and hit crazy hard. I think I'm up to 45 different calibers from 17hmr to 50bmg. I've got most everything covered. Kinda looking for special unique calibers that fill the voids. I live in western ND. So open and flat is what I shoot. If I lived in Alaska or some heavy mtn area 358 and the bigger bores would suit me better. I'm looking to pick on antelope and deer. Barrel life doesn't really matter to me. If I only get 5-700 rounds out of it that's fine. It's a hobby. I enjoy spending money on the sport. 5-700 rounds will probably last me 15-20 years with it. A minor expense for a new barrel in that duration. From what I read a 300 norma case will easily fit in a 700 LA. Case capacity is just over 100gr. Simple to neck down. Quality brass. Seems fairly simple. I just don't have experience pushing light for caliber bullets fast. Wondering what has and hasn't worked for people.

Nate is a great smith,& a great person ,I'd just tell him what you want , He's a shooter , hunter them are Great plus points in any Gunsmith !!! He built me a Great rifle also thks ! Gd luck !!
