338 Rum build

Hello!
I'm going to have a Remington 700 build in 338 Rum, and in regards to brass, i have a few questions.

300 RUM Norma brass neck up to 338 RUM.

Just straight thru a Redding FL die, with tapered expander, then thru a Bushing die, and fire ?

Neck turning, outside/inside, donuts?

Anybody got experience with this?

Could use some help getting me in the right direction!

Yes, unfortunately it is very hard to find.
Have seen Nosler 338 RUM, but at 6 usd pr case, its to expensive.

Have seen on this forum that some people have done it, but would like to get some more information on this

There was a thread on it, but I can't recall it's title.

If you're going to all that trouble up front, have you considered chambering to the .338 "Edge"?

The 300 RUM is a slightly longer case than a 338 RUM. I would do like HARPERC said and have it chambered in 338 edge which is a 338-300 RUM. That way you could run the 300 RUM brass and squeak a little more velocity out of it

It will, or won't, based on the same parameters the standard RUM does, or doesn't.

Is your rifle being custom built? If not are you doing a standard bottom metal and feeder or an actual magazine that locks in? You can get an extended box and with a little dremel time get your rifle to feed the 338 edge rounds or have your rifle builder do it for you. I've put extended mags in my 300 and 338 RUMs with no problem and about 20 minutes.

My partner has the "Edge" I have the the standard RUM, both have about 3.6" magazine to work with. If you wish to use long 300 grain gain bullets, or very long mono metal seated out you will either single load, or use an extended magazine for either of them.

If you are going to use bullets in the 250 grain range likely seated magazine length will work for either as well.

Again regarding length what can be said of one, can be said of the other.

I just came across your post....hopefully you already have had some success with converting the 300 RUM cases over to 338 RUM. I had some good success with the following steps using Norma brass.

Switched out my expander to an 8 mm and ran through press. Then switched back to the 338 and completed full sizing. Once finished I trimmed to length. I did have a bit of a donut part way down the neck that needed to be neck turned. Some work to it....but the end product has performed excellent.
