8 twist 22” 300 Win Mag with 215 Berger Hybrids

If going with the shorter barrel and your heart set on 300WM,

Think about using H4350 or similar burn rate.

I've found I use much less powder to get similar velocities of slower powders.

Just watch for pressure signs
You bet. 4350 is on the list. I use in in my 30wsms with great results.

I'm still kicking around going to a 24" tube..... I can always cut off a few inches if I hate it.......as you can tell I'm waffling on 22" or 24"....

Personally I wouldn't even bother with 4350 trying to push a 215. You may find an accurate load, but velocity will suck.

I use H1000 out of a 26" barrel with the 215's, but I use Retumbo with the 230's. Great results with both. Yes, you will have a shorter tube, but from my perspective, in addition to finding an accuracy node, the benefit of those powders is the temperature stability. I believe you said you were shooting alot at 6000'. Great ambient temperature fluctuations from season to season and sometimes from day to day. Those powders will give you great performance across a broad spectrum of weather changes. Just my $.02

Interesting timing. I am building another .300 win mag with a 22" tube to accomodate my 7" TBAC. Like you, I pretty much can't shoot unsuppressed any more. Although the 30 cal certainly bumps you a little more with the suppressor on. I have a bunch of H1000 and RL16, I am going to play around with. Have some 215s, 208s, 195s, and some 200s. My buddy shoots a 20" 300 win mag with the 212 ELDx and gets about 2750 out of it velocity wise with H1000. For me, anything above 2800 fps with a 200ish grain bullet will suit me just fine for my effective range.

I agree, hard to go back to muzzle breaks and loud guns once you shoot with a can. I've been shooting short mags for a few years with cans and the elk have no idea where the shot came from. I've had two occasions where the group of elk ran towards us after the shot. That can't seem to pinpoint where the noise came from.

Any idea what parts you will use on your new build? Specifically, what barrel you will use? Manufacturer, twist, contour, etc?

Sure do.
Barrel: Proof Research 22" Carbon Fiber 10 twist Sendero Contour
Action: Defiance Deviant Hunter
Stock: Manners EH1A
Bottom Metal: Badger M5
Trigger: Trigger Tech

I live and hunt mainly above 5000', so I am not real worried about stabilizing bullets, my 24" 10 twist had zero problems stabilizing a 215 and my buddies 20" does just fine with the 212 ELDx. I am really interested to see how the 195 ELDm perform, seems like I could obtain a good balance of speed and energy with that bullet. We will see.

Thanks, that is helpful info. Should be an awesome build! I like the proof barrel. I live in Colorado and do all my shooting above 5000 feet as well. I am sure a 10 twist would be fine for me. Makes me wonder if an 8 twist is almost too fast for 215's?

An 8 twist is a long way from being too fast. It'll just hold up better if you decide to shoot some targets way out there. It'll also help with terminal performance.

Thanks Gordo, that is good feedback. If I decide to go with a 24" inch or longer tube, I guess I could explore 230 bergers and h1000. An 8 twist should be perfect for that scenario.

If I end up going with a 22" barrel I suspect I will be lucky to get 215s to 2800fps. If you were in my shoes, what length barrel would you choose?

I don't think an 8 twist will be too fast at all. I just know from my experience a 10 will do and I have seen 10 twist barrels be effective shooting 200 plus grain bullets where I hunt and live. I also have zero patience and I found a 10 twist that was available... I have Proof Carbon barrels on all my rifles and the one thing that seems to be consistent with them in my experience is that they shoot extremely well, and there is very little POI shift from suppressed to unsuppressed.

What is the timeline on your build? If mine gets done before yours I can certainly load up some 215s and shoot them through my 22" barrel to give you an idea of what I am seeing. I am just waiting for my stock from Manners, which could be 2 weeks or 2 months... I always have 215s in my arsenal, so far they have proven to be an excellent choice in the 30 Cals I have seen. Judging by what I have seen out of a 20" barreled 300 win mag, I think 2800 theoretically should be attainable through a 22.

That's a tough one for me. I currently have a 24" which is the stock barrel on my win mag. I get decent velocities... But I have a 9 twist Bartlein that I'm waiting on the reamer for. That'll finish at 28". If I'm using the win mag, I'm not walking much with it, or in any sort of brush with it. It'll be my long range hunting rifle, or target rifle. I have a different gun to walk the woods with. It's all about what fits you, and what you want to do the best. I do know that you can always go shorter, but there's no adding more on once it's been taken off.

Deal! Mine should be done in about 5 weeks. I will reciprocate if I get it done before you!

Also, what do you see in weight savings from a steel barrel to your sendero countour proof barrels? Let's assume like steel #3 contour from bartlein

You bring up a good point. I have a 22" 300wsm that is really light. Maybe I should use that for my backpack hunts and treat this new build as more of a long range rig that is less maneuverable, but achieves maximum ballistic potential. I need to mull that one over a bit.

I guess depending on length maybe 1-2lbs? I really don't shoot Proof because of the weight savings, I have just had good luck with every single Proof carbon fiber barrel I have shot (I have 3). Not to say I haven't heard of a few bad ones, but I think that is common throughout all manufacturers. I also do think they provide an increased level of predictability when I am doing load development. Every gun I own that has a Proof barrel has been absolutely painless to load for. Just my experience, I am sure others have had different results.
