300 Weatherby Using Hogdon US 869

I'm with you, why not US869 in 300WBY?? you can load in 7 STW, 300 RUM, 300WM really.
I think this just needs some trail data. I take this , i will post my results. 300 WBY why not, maybe just saving data for 2019 reloading manual, new data for old calibers? LOL

...I don't think you can get enough 869 into the 300 wby WBY case to get any decent velocities. Fore sure not with the lighter bullets...........MAAAYBE with the 230-240 sized pills.

Let us know,

pwee223,

With all due respect and no I'm not trying to mean...:);

This has been answered on the first page of this thread. So, either you didn't read the explanations or you didn't understand what was written. It is the case capacity to bore capacity ratio which tells the tale of which powders will work and which do not. In this instance with the .300 Win. Mag or .300 Weatherby, there is not enough room in the case to fill that case with US869 and still achieve the velocities achieved by other, faster powders. With those loads which someone does call out for US869 in either cartridge, you will notice a decide loss of velocity and the inefficiency of unburned powder. Now, if slower velocities and wasted powder don't bother you then have at it. But be advised that there could be a potentially dangerous situation which might occur with slow powder compressed in a case.

If i'm out of bounds, i apologize. 15 years ago i never saw 6mm / 243 loads with H1000 at compressed / lower velocity's than standard powder loads? if this makes any reasoning. I bow out, thank ya'll for your help. Safety First... As always.
Regards, JW

I did not write that you were out of bound or unsafe. And I specifically wrote that I was not trying to mean to you.

If this is the road you choose to follow, have at it. No one is stopping you, it's your money, time and materials. Most of us at least give a passing thought to efficiency and wasting components to achieve nothing. If this idea of super slow powders intrigues you then I certainly won't say any more. The component manufacturers will sing your praises as a consumer of their products.

Best of luck with your enterprise.

The 6.5-300 Weatherby is listed on Hogdon's website with load data for it with US 869. This powder works well in my 6.5-300 (3550-3600) with 143 grain bullets, 1/2" MOA.

So, what I don't understand, is if the 6.5-300 is the 300 case just necked down, why isn't there load data for US 869 with the 300 Weatherby?
same case (powder volume) but 6.5 has much smaller bore, therefore much smaller combustion volume, case volume/bore diameter is an index of relative powder usability.

But also, while we're revisiting a 6 year old thread, let me add: there's no reason you couldn't use 869 in a .300 weatherby PROVIDED its with bullets over 200 grains. I doubt it would be the BEST choice, wouldn't be the worst.

Hodgdon has data showing us869 to be a great performer with 230 and 250 grain ATIP bullets in the 300 PRC.

The .300 weatherby has a slightly bigger internal capacity than the .300 prc.

I hope that after nearly 6 years, @weatherbee has figured out his load development.
Hey that's why I said RESURRECTION!!!! Already 🤣

But you know, there's all kinds of stuff I was sure I'd have figured out by now that I still don't, maybe weatherbee's load development is the same way. Either way, let the record reflect that I don't think 869 would be a complete fail in the .300 wby.

The difference is I quoted him directly, so he is notified and responds accordingly if he wants to.
