Custom Build Caliber Suggestions.

Since you have a LA with standard bolt face, build a 280ai or 280 Shrman. Don't build anything on a short action in my opinion unless it's a 308 win case based cartridge.

My doner gun is an older model 700 Remington Classic in 35 whelen made back when Remington cared. I would like to have a lighter weight hunting rifle that shoots 6.5 or 7mm 140 grn pills 3000+ FPS but not burn the the barrel out after 700-800 rounds. I might add I already have:

1) remy custom 6.5 CM 22 in bartlein barrel varmint contour

2)Stiller TAC30 in 260 24 in bartlein barrel not sure which contour but its a little thicker than the varmint. This one has a heavy Manners stock

3) Mod 700 5r Mil spec in 308

All the above are pretty heavy just wanting something lighter to hunt with and occasionally punch paper.

Thx guys
Have it blueprinted and trued, and have the smith put on a 26" 1:8 twist 6.5mm barrel, chambered for 6.5 Sherman.

Personally, I feel using 140 grain 7mm bullets is a waste of the 7mm's potential. If you want to shoot 140-155 grain bullets, go with a 6.5mm. If you want 160-200 grainers, go with a 7mm.

I went 280AI a few years ago and never looked back, 7mm Rem Mag ballistics, less powder and recoil. I use 160 Gr Accubond's over 55.5 grains of IMR 4350 and get 2970fps out of a 26" barrel. Very accurate and comfortable to shoot.

I think any 6.5 pushing 140's at 3,000+ will be a barrel burner. The exception is supposed to be the 6.5saum running only h1000 with a long barrel to keep pressure low. The 6.5-284 is pushing hard to get to 3,000 thus will be hard son barrels and so will the 6.5-06 and 6.5 Sherman. If you are keeping it a standard bolt face the 280ai is about your only choice and not one you will be disappointed with.
