Where does the .30-06 fit into the LRH Pantheon of cartridges?

I agree with those Narrow Shoulders in 06 like the 7mm-STW, I'd much rather have an LRM or 7mm Jarrett or even the Dakota. LOL!All kidding aside, you can see fella's popping Milk Jugs at 1000 Yards with relative ease with low budget all factory 30-06 Rifles.
I have a .25-06 AI and .30-06 AI... Just never liked the heavy tapers and low shoulder angles. Also, my .25-06 AI is keeping up with my old .257 Wby, and my .30-06 AI is keeping close on the heels of my .300WM...

For more than 50 years my go to caliber has been the venerable 30-06. I carry 3 different magazines for my Savage rifle of which I bought a long time ago when I still used to get pimples. I carried 150, 165, and 180 grain bullets and depending on the size and distance of the animal I was hunting, I used that specific mag. My other go to 30 caliber rifle the 30-30 Winchester mainly used in heavy brush or forest.

There are other calibers that will outperform other calibers but there is not a single one that is the best for every scenario as every scenario requires a special touch. In my opinion why use a 20 pound sledge hammer when a 16 ounce hammer will get the job done. Oh! One more thing if I was ever going to buy a magnum caliber it would not be a 300 Winchester, it would be a 7mm mag.
I have owned both rifles,300 win mag and 7mm rem mag. To this day I still own the 300 but the 7mm went bye bye years ago!

Dewwwwwd... that's hot. I'm running, as I recall, a 168 Berger gr. in front of some IMR 4350 @ 2804 fps. It's an accuracy load which I think is awesome but what your getting is super-duper. Is there something special about your chamber or did you just work this load up and that's what you got?

minium sammi spec chamber. 24 inch tube on a sako l61 stock factory rifle. Book max is 61grs.

I see my 30-06 as my general-purpose hunting rifle/cartridge. Though I've been shooting one for decades, in recent years I've returned to it as my primary hunting rifle. It's done well.

Elk, black bear, antelope and mule deer with the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip loaded to 2970 fps. The elk was a one-shot kill at about 338 yards, and the black bear a one-shot kill at about 325 yards. Those are my two longest range kills with this rifle & cartridge.

Wolf and grizzly with the 200 gr Nosler Partition at a modest 2600 fps. I'm sure there was more velocity avail with the 200 gr bullet, but that particular load shot so well from my rifle... So I kept it and it worked just fine.

Mine is just a simple Rem 700 CDL with a 6x Leupold. I did have an older 2-7x on it for the Brooks range hunt.

My son has my old 30-06, a Model of 1917 that was sporterized long ago. It's served four generations of my family now. Great rifle. He's used it for bear and whitetail deer with excellent success.

I've worked up a few loads that seem promising for longer-range shooting, but for me the 30-06 will likely remain my general purpose hunting rifle. The freezer is full of meat it has put there.

Regards, Guy

Don't know if its already been pointed out, but the old 06 was the sniper round of choice for the US Military from WWI to most of the way through Vietnam. Some real shooters like Carlos Hathcock used their skill, some decent rifle/scope combo's, and that old cartridge to make some spectacular long-range shots. Of course, thats a different kind of LRH.

For the most part until he got his M14 Hathcock was shooting an old M70 "deer rifle" with a 4x weaver on it till the supply seargant stole a Unertil from the brigade supply warehouse. HI received an item that was not new and not working. HA!

I have a M1 Garand in 30-06 that my Uncle gave me 50 years ago. Made by International Harvester in 1953 I love shooting it and it does kill deer!
I watched Wild Boar Fever and thought how good the Garand would work for that.
Shoot pull away on their nose and whack them!

I have never owned or shot a .308 but throughout my entire life I have read and heard that the .308 is best due to recoil and you can re-load with better BC bullets for it. My question to the 308 shooters is if they want something faster why not use those "higher" BC bullets on a 30-06. Biggest deer I shot was a 12 pointer using a 125 grain bullet that was going pretty fast, did not like how much meat it destroyed. From than on I moved to a heavier, slower bullet that will not pulverize all the meat.

It is like people that conceal and carry they want a .380 that has the power of a 9mm, buy a 9mm than. They want a 9mm to be like a 40 cal. and so on.
