I have been reading here for a while now going over old and new threads looking for information about Elk and what it takes to put them down. My 12 year old daughter wanted to come to Montana this year and Elk hunt she has a Browning A Bolt in 7mm-08 so I loaded some 168gr Berger classic hunters behind a load of IMR 4350 at 2555fps topped it off with a Athlon Cronus BTR scope and off we went. Well Saturday was opening day and we got on a Bull that evening and he gave her a shot at 425 yards she was seated with rifle on a bog pod tripod I give the scope 2.5 mils up and she sent the shot. Elk turn walk down the hill slowly about 30 yards and fell over dead. She hit him right behind the shoulder blade. When I field dressed him the Berger had made a little hole in and blew up the lungs were gone. I was amazed at how well they performed. I just wanted to thank everyone for all the information on this site that helped me put a combo for my daughter that would work and to brag a little on my girl. Now I got till Friday to put her on a deer then she will be tagged out for 2018!

Congrats! I shot a bull at 400 yards this year using a Berger VLD 168 gr for the first time and was very impressed. I also hit it right behind the shoulder and wow did it make hamburger of the vitals with no exit wound. I have always used partitions. I would have like to see what it does when it hits bone.

Thank you everyone.

She hit a rib on this elk. It just busted the rib and went on in to boiler room. I would like to see what it would do if it hit the shoulder.

Congrats! That is what the game is all about! Tell that her "Way to Go!" That is awesome shooting! Hope she gets her deer too!

Awesome great deal on the whole works ! I'm a fan of 7mm-08 . As well a fan of elk steaks . Most happy you and your daughter had a hunt together . Congratulations.

Congratulations! I started my youngest daughter out with a 7-08 when she was 12. She got 4 elk and 4 deer her first 4 years out. A grandson and I have both used that same rifle to kill more elk.
