I'm looking for a good hunting scope and something I can shoot an occasional match and LR steel with. My favorite scope in the past was the sightron sIII 3.5-10 with capped turrets since I can't stand exposed turrets on a hunting rifle. Unfortunately I only have one of those left and several rifle that need glass. I have a night force shv on the way and was just wondering if there are other contenders I should look at? Thanks

What is your price range, weight, how much elevation, minimum power, max power, etc. ?

Is there really a "Do it All" scope? When I'm hunting I don't like a busy reticle
But on targets I do? You probably should narrow or define your personal needs a
bit better.

What do you have against exposed turrets?
I could see why you wouldn't like exposed target turrets but there are great options for exposed turrets with zero stops.
I had a sighton siii with target turrets in the past and it was terrible, every time I slung it the turret moved.
I really like the zeiss v4 and v6 turrets, exposed but awesome.

I think the main thing is to make shore it fits your eyes. Many people get worked up over a brand, the power, lens objective size, ect. and forget that we are all a little different. I have not ben able to see clearly out of scopes turned up to very high powers (over 10 or 12). If I stay with a scope that goes no higher then 10 I'm good. I looked through scopes turned up higher and I can't focus then, turn the power down and I can get it focused. There may be a high powered scope out there that will work for me but I have not found it and it maybe out of my price range and 2.5-8 or 3-9's work well for me. I do want to get a Leupold vx-3i 3.5-10, I think it will work nice for me on my 270wsm. The features should be as close to what you want as you can get, but most important make shore it fits you so you can see clearly at all the power ranges it has.

The original vx6 3-18x50 sits atop my primary hunter with an moa turret. You can find the capped versions in here quite regularly. For me, thats a do all scope. I also have the new hd version with the zl2 turrets. They're worth a serious look. None of the traditional concerns there.

I have an shv 5-20x56 not illuminated it works great for everything I do with it I've shot a bear at 40 yards and a deer at 50 and I've stretched my gun out to 1760 with it. Mine is the older capped version I think I would prefer the not capped but it runs and works great never had any dialing issues with it and return to zero has always worked!

Hard to beat a Bushnell 4200 Elite 2.5-10x40 or a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 for all around big game hunting use. If you plan to do some night hunting ck out the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 crosshair/green dot, this is my all around "go to" scope these days, but I do a lot of low light hog hunting and need an illuminated reticle.

It's not you. The scopes are the problem.

Something to note on the lower power scopes, most scopes below ~12x do not have a parallax adjustment and are set parallax free at 100 yards, if shooting long you will have to deal with this.
