Which bullet for elk?

Put it in the vitals and it won't matter which one. However, use the one that shoots best out of your rifle.

For any 7 mm I would recommend bullets in the 160 to 175 grain. so any of the bullets you mentioned would be good. The 160 Accubond would also be a good choice for Elk.

The great thing about these forums is the variety of opinions which we encounter for every question asked or statement made. Agreement may not always be an assured occurrence, many may find a reason to disagree, mostly through personal experiences.
I would hate to be the bearer of the statement above to all those moose hunters in Scandinavian countries who choose the 6.5x55 or to those of us here in the US hunting elk every year that our cartridges of choice below .30 caliber just won't work for elk!
What do I do with all those elk I killed with the 6.5 RSAUM? Or the 6.5-06 AI or the .280 AI or the rest of the other cartridges successfully used to fill my tags? Bringing them back to life is kinda out of the question. Regards.

Guys I didn't mean to imply that any round below a .300 would not kill an elk . A perfectly placed 22long rifle will harvest an elk. But as others have said before if a hunter knows his or her limitations and experience with any round things can be kept in perspective .
I will be shooting my 300 RUM. My dad is going with me and only has a 270 so he will be shooting my 7mm. I know a .30 would be better, but I don't have another .30. Just asking opinions on the 2 bullets. Thanks for those who replied.

Gosh, the good old 270 Winchester has filled many freezers with elk. If your dad is good with his existing rifle, it's not a bad choice.
Seems a little late in the game to be selecting a bullet weight if you're going to be launching in two days. Do you have the 7mm Rem mag sighted-in with one of your bullet choices now?
Between the two, I'd tend towards the 160 gr Nosler Partition. That bullet is well proven from the various 7mm magnums. I have used a different Berger VLD with good success on mule deer. Just thinking the Partition might be a better choice if your dad gets a bad angle on the shot and more penetration is required.
Enjoy the hunt! Pretty cool that you're hunting with your dad. I like that.

The bullets are both failed in. The Partition is 1/2 an inch higher than the VLD at 100. I can easily make the adjustment. Both group really well. That is why I am second guessing it. Was gonna go with the VLD but the Partition has performed flawlessly for years for me.

We need an update to this thread as soon as OP gets back...
I just harvested my bull this year with my 7 RM. 139 gr Barnes LRX. Nice 6, one high shoulder shot dumped him. He got back so I gave him another (he was stumbling through trees so I rushed follow up and hit him high and back). That dumped him again and he expired in less than 30 seconds.

No need to reinvent the wheel now. I vote partition too. Have seen them work real well close in and reasonably far too. for 300 to maybe 400 yards in - the partition would be great.
