6.5 Grendel to a 6.5x47????

Grendel is a different bolt face than the 6.5x47. You may be able to do it, open up the bolt, but it depends on the bolt, action and the systems built into it. I am not real familiar with the Ruger Americans so I cannot say for sure if it is possible. It is not a simple barrel switch though.

Yea I understand it ain't a simple barrel switch, I just thought it would be kinda cool to have a smidge more gas behind it is all. I was hoping there was someone who's has done it somewhere. Be kinda fun I think!
Talk to a gunsmith and ask him if there's enough shank left to rechamber it or if you need to start over.

If it can be done at worst you need to get the larger bolt face to replace what you have.

When you consider what you're gaining vs the expense it may not be worth it. The Grendel is a quite capable round in it's own right out to 600yds.

What would the gain be between the two. Good thing about the Ruger is it shouldn't be to hard to swap things around.

6.5x 47 probably has 3-400 FPS on the Grendel with 123gr bullets. (Grendel gets 2600, x47 will push the 123 scenar to 3000). The difference between killing something at 400 yards and killing something at 600 yards. Rather than a 6.5 Grendel to a 6.5x47 lapua, look at a 6mm fat rat. Pushing 6mm bullets up to 2800 FPS.

I have two 6.5x47's. Very impressive round. 130 bergers at 2950 fps with H4350. Other inexdhoots 130 Accubond at 2900 fps. Awesome performance with both bullets in deer. The Berger load holds enough velocity to shoot out to 750 yds on deer size game. I think you will the 6.5x47.

Try the Grendel, then worry about the swap. If you don't like it, you might end up being able to sell it here on the forum (or locally) for most of what you have in it, as the 6.5G is a very popular cartridge. The Grendel is a fun little round and works great for a truck gun, if you're patrolling the property, deer inside of 500 yards, or if you do a lot of coyote hunting. Zero recoil and pushes 123's to over 2,600 FPS MV with handloads. Cheap Hornady brass works good for it, but Lapua also makes brass for it now, which is what I recommend for a bolt action.

All it's going to be is a truck gun. For coyotes am rochchucks. I'm planning on keeping it for a while. What kinda range should I be able to get outta the Ruger with a vortex diamondback tactical on it?

If it's accurate you should be good to about 300-400yds all day long. That's the same ranges and purpose behind my carrying a Ruger Mini in 6.8spc. It's been very reliable and effective for me on varmints and predators at 300-400yds and has pretty similar ballistics within that range shooting the 110gr Accubond. The Grendel though will be a bit flatter and probably more accurate due to the higher BC's with the 120-130gr ammo.

That's all going to depend on how well that particular rifle shoots. Every rifle is different, even if it's the one directly behind it on the assembly line that is identical.

As for range with that rifle and that scope, I have no idea. I know there's guys shooting the AR's with high-end Grendel uppers upwards of 1,000 yards and hitting steel with no issues. There's some guys shooting beyond that. Not sure I'd recommend that, but some are doing it. But I will say this, ballistically, inside of 500 yards, the 6.5 Grendel should be great for deer and coyotes with no issues.

I have a JP 6.5 Grendel that is my go to "truck ranch rifle". Its a fun little round. I get good accuracy out to 500 on steal. Thats as far as I ever play with it. Very good round for shooting things like porky pines from a couple hundred yards out of trees, small pigs, and coyotes. Never have tried it on deer but have no doubt it be good on whitetail out to 250 yards.
Defiantly give the Grendel a try. If don't like it, i would not spend money swapping barrel's and spending with a gunsmith. I'd sell it or keep it and buy into a 6 or 6.5 Creedmoor.

If you decide to sell the gun let me know I would definitely be interested in buying it. I have 6.5 Grendel in the ar15 platform it is a nice round.
