Need load data for 28 Nosler with 143gn Hammer and N570 powder

My Nucleus action and Proof Carbon barrel are arriving just a few days before I depart on a 3 week hunt.
I won't have much time to test the various load parameters and this is my first 28N.
It's been chambered for ELD-M 180s but I want to start with Hammer 143s because I've heard that they are very easy (quick) to develop loads for.

Can anyone suggest beginning charges for the 143 Hammers using N570?
I've heard that the jump isn't critical for Hammer bullets.
Does anyone have a suggested jump or COAL to start with?

I'm sorry I cant help with load data but holy **** that will be a fast load.. also have you contacted Hammer? They are really helpful with load information. Good luck

Yes, I calculated that I'd be up to around 3,600 FPS and Steve at Hammer confirmed.
He didn't give me any load data and I was hoping to start loading my break-in and initial my ladder ammo tonight since I won'have much time for load development.

I'll call Steve at Hammer in the morning and also the distributor for N570 to help establish my beginning load and estimated max load to work up to.
 
This is what I did with the same bullet with R26 out of a 7STW yesterday.

I shot a ladder today with R26 and 143 Grain Hammer Hunter bullets. Loaded mag length, using Federal 215 primers. Gradous 7Stw, 1:9.5 twist Krieger, 28" barrel.

Weather 80 degrees - 90 percent humidity - 30 feet above sea level.

I started at 76 grains and had pretty heavy ejector mark on brass at 82 grains. Still no sign of pressure in bolt lift, but I stopped there, and will pull the bullets that I loaded with higher charges.

My Labradar missed a number of shots, which it doesn't normally do. I don't know if it was due to the all copper bullets, the speed, the drizzly rain, or something dumb I did.

Anyway, this combo is much faster than I expected, and looks to have very nice accuracy potential.

80 Grains 3557 fps - No pressure signs
81 Grains 3601 fps - No pressure signs
82 Grains 3643 Pressure - ejector mark on brass & poi jumped up 4" at 600 yards

79-81 Grains were all within 2" vertically and 3" horizontally at 600 yards.

Going to load a bunch at 80 grains, which should put me in a nice wide accuracy node, well below pressure in this rifle, at about 3550 fps.

I forgot to mention that my twist is 8 and my barrel is 26 inches.

The Nucleus action is different and unfamiliar to me.
It doesn't have an ejector pin so it won't show any ejector marks.
Also the firing pin is small and probably has very little slop so it may not show a crater even with high pressure.
I'll look for heavy bolt lift and muzzle velocity for indications of hi pressure.
 
I just spoke with Steve at Hammer.... Great help!
He simplified my load development and recommend:
  • Starting load at 82gn.
  • Single test loads in 1 grain increments
  • Just seat the bullets with 3 pressure rings in the neck.
  • Stop when I see pressure signs or reach 3,550 MV (for now).
  • Load a small batch and test.
  • Load for hunting trip.
  • Use new brass for each load since I'm pressed for time and have enough new brass for testing and for the hunting trip.
  • When I'm back from the hunting trip, I'll do a more thorough testing of primers, seating depth, charges, etc.

That is screaming from your stw. Wow. I know of another customer that is running the 143 Hammer Hunter at 3600 in his 28n. I kinda figured he is a bit hot. I would figure 3550fps to be top end on the 28n.

Kai, let us know how it goes when you get the rifle in. Looking forward to your hunt results when you get out.

I spoke with the distributor of N570 powder and Berger bullets.
They are not familiar with Hammer bullets and used the Berger data as a basis and recommended a beginning charge of 80gn of N570 and load up to a maximum velocity of 3375fps for a 145gn copper bullet. That was for a SAMMI chamber.

For my 7mm Wby with the 131 Hammer Hunter, I tested Norma MRP from 74.0 to 78.0 grains, loading every 0.5 grains. Based on those speeds (1 shot each) I went back and tested 77.0, 77.5 and 78.0 grains. The 78.0 grain group was 0.84 inches for 4 shots at 100 yards compared to 0.87 and 1.10 for the 77.0 and 77.5 grain 3-shot groups.

My bullets are seated so that the loads will fit into the factory magazine well with no issues.

Final speed average 3550 (3545-3553).

I loaded up a bunch at 78.0 grains, sighted in the rifle, ordered my turret tape from Custom Turrets, and went hunting. I didn't have any more time than you did.

All of this was done with brass I bought from someone else, cleaned, annealed and sized. The rifle is new to me so I didn't have any that was formed to this chamber. By firing some factory ammo in this rifle as a test for shoulder length I body-sized my brass to the correct length, and all is well.

I just tried the 143 Hammer's ( mine all weigh 145 gr.?) in my 28 Nos Ridgeline Bertram brass, 92 gr R33, 3.472" COAL, 3480 fps, .630" @ 100 yds pretty good for min. load development- this gun shoots 162 ELD-m's .3"
I also tried some 124 Hammer's in my Kimber hunter 6.5 creed and the first load I tried was .510" gun shoots .8"- 1.2" with most everything else i've tried
 
Most of our line gained a couple of grains when we made a change in our alloy, and changed the small radius at the base. This happened a couple years ago and we decided that it was best not to change the names of the bullets.

I'm shooting the 143 in a cooper 7mm STW. Using 79.5 gr RL 26 at 3390 In nosler brass and Fed 215. I ran my ladder up to 82 gr and velocity was just shy of 3600. Rifle is pretty much a one hole shooter where I have it when I do my job. Killed a whitetail buck and two elk with it last year.
