new rifle suggestions

If you go tikka you mite whant a new stock for it. The Bergara b-14 HMR is your best choice other than the Christensen Arms. The HMR comes in 300wm and 6.5 cm.
 
I think his issue is he wants all family members to be able to use it. This means he needs a stock with an adjustable length of pull and comb height.

I was looking at the CA Mesa and Ridgeline online last night, the Mesa is really nice for the price. The Bergara is nice, especially the Pro, but you are already mid 9's to almost 10lb bare.

While I would like that I do not think "light" and "adjustable" go together. I really just want my oldest to be able to shoot it and she is a teenager so not TOO big a gap to fill.

So far for what I am seeing the CA Mesa and Roughtech look the best to me without getting too crazy on cost. The Havak also looks good but that is bumping up to $1800ish.

I think you would really like the CA Mesa. I have one in 300 WM and it shoots great. They have a lot of features for the price IMO, making it a tough one to beat. Would also recommend the Tikka T3X as others have said. Mine in 6.5 CM is a hell of a shooter and it's fairly light. I still have the factory stock on it which isn't great by any means but it works. The trigger on the Tikka can be vastly improved with a cheap spring kit.
 
went to Cabelas today and handled a few more:

Sako Roughtech: surprisingly nice, touch heavy, no break but detachable mags

Fierce Fury: is this worth the extra coin over the CA Mesa? seemed really nice

CA Mesa: nice rifle, handled well, mags would be a big plus

Hell's Canyon: nice, but felt and looked a little strange, I don't know, just me maybe

no Havak, would love to have held one.

Try buying an action that uses savage prefit barrels, arc nucleus, bighorn, etc. then buy a proof prefit and a Manners with a mini chassis, home made top notch custom rifle!

Sako and Tikka: good accuracy reviews but would need a stock re-do right off the bat.

Any input appreciated on this. Once this ticket is filled I will be going for a much larger/longer range rifle just for me as the .30-378 has worn out it's welcome.

It is hard to best the trusted 270 Win. Lord it light for small gsme/ varmits, heavier for whitetail, heavier yet for elk, moose, black bear etc. In my opinion, the best for youngsters, a wife and or occasional user, and most importantly, proven. Been around for many years, ammo easy to find, I could go on but look into this before making a choice!
 
Personally, extending to 500 yards, I'd be looking for a 30cal hole if restricting to lower recoiling rounds. Probably a 308Win. If you're willing to shorten to 300ish, I'd say a 270 and perhaps 6.5 is OK.

I guess I'm conservative but I've seen elk absorb a LOT of punishment. Last season I witnessed a guy pump four rounds of 7mmMag through a herd bull from ~150-200 yards, it covered an amazing amount of ground. Shot the satellite with my 338 from 720, crumpled on the spot.

Where I hunt elk the 270 is VERY popular, but 300 yards is pretty much the limit of what people shoot with it. I'd move up caliber as you move out.
