7mm-08 or 6.5

I know no one has mentioned it but your .280 Remington would be perfect for her!
It is a great hunting round for your Wife, low recoil, and the better hunting round all together!
I told her she needs one to have them match and I had an opportunity to get a 7mm express (same thing as my 280) but she said it looks to big and I told her would could add a brake to it

Very subjective question, but you seem to have lots of 7mm bullets. The 6.5 bullets you have are match so not gonna be good for hunting. I have both chambers and prefer 7-08 for deer hunting. I think both work well, have easy recoil, so does your wife like the 700 or model 7 better? Good luck
She like my 700 but I thought about a mode 7 since most rifles are shorter barreled

First this seems to be a more of a conversation now as the decision is already been made so this all is kind of a moot point for the decision. But some comments about the 6.5 cm having too much drop or being insufficient for deer remember that in Europe the 6.5 is used to kill moose. And it does so with aplomb, the 7/O8 is a great cartridge considering it for my girlfriend also. But as I'm probably getting a 6.5 we would lean that way until proven otherwise. The funny thing and all this discussion is talking about recoil when you do the math on it the 6.5 and 7/ O8 and a 308 are within a hairball of each other in Recoil given a standardized weight pattern. In fact it's 308 and a 7/O8 are neck-and-neck and recall with just a slight reduction given to the seven mmm if I remember correctly given equivalent sectional densities which is going to determine your penetration to a large degree the recall was within one and a half pounds of eachgiven which I think most of us would agree would be difficult to discern at anything other than bench shooting. And just touching on the 243 because some people seem to be strongly against it good bullet and good bullet placement or going to probably make a huge difference not saying anybody did a gut-shot but I've never had any failures with Barnes Bullets or Hawke from my ex-wife's 243 and it's killed many a wild boar and more than a few deer. but like everybody else here I think you can't go wrong with any of the choices you've made. Of course if you roll your own then the sky's the limit..

I voted the 243 out for her since the possibility for a bad shot is high with her not being so experienced
The 243 is a favorite around here in the hands of an experienced even a 22 long rifle is a good choice

I'm going to talk to her and l discuss this info see if she is made up completely on the 6.5 and I'll bring in the .308 into the discussion

I don't think anyone has mentioned the 260 Rem. I have a 243, 260, 7-08 and a 308. All get the job done. I'd pick either the 308 or the 7-08. with a 120-125 grain bullet, they kill like lightning struck with a well placed shot. Also heavier bullets are available for either if the need be.

The 243 that she wants is a very good choice with premium bullets. She will enjoy it more because that's what she wants (wives are wired that way ). I stopped reloading once I came across the Winchester power max bonded in 243. I would tell you about how the well it mushrooms and all that but I've never recovered a bullet since they've all passed clean through. I've also never tracked a deer with them. If you are moving up elk the three 6.5 is a better option. I've seen three elk kills with the Creedmoor and all three fell in their tracks.

If she likes the red tips Norma makes a 160 grain Polymer tip bullet, and that or the 165 grain solid in the old green box would be enough for elk!

Wife is getting into hunting and was debating on which gun to buy her I have the option to buy a Remington 700 6.5 Creedmoor or a Remington model 7 in a 7-08 both are price the same I reload and have a lot of 7mm Bullets but I also have 160- 147gr eld match factory rounds for the 6.5
Which one would you all recommend and why
Have a look at the new Australian made Lithgoe in either 243 or 308
we have used both on much larger animals than Elk and using Game King pills it drops them fast
For a go to gun I would use 308 as it has the punch for bigger game out to 1000 metres
Cheers for down under

Personally I would go with the 700 SPS in 7mm/08, a nicer looking rifle ,2"'s more barrel and a very wide selection of bullets for it and more frontal area and just as lite as the M7,can find them with Floor plate ,detachable magazine or solid bottom, you will never go wrong with it and too many proprietary cartridges that really do not improve on existing one other than gun writer putting there 2 cents towards them as the mother of all, Pete
