Let's talk about 2 mile cartridges

Gun is heavy but we also lock barrel to heavy 700 lb standup bench,Ed

The numbers of the 1002gr are impressive even at just 2650fps.

IMO...You would be hard pressed to get 2500 fps with the 1002gr bullet. 2650 fps sounds about right for the 902gr...

An improved version of the 50 BMG would help some, but tougher brass and slower powders would also be needed to push these pills at the 2800-2900 fps speeds to be competitive at 2 miles.

Kirby has his super improved 510 Maximus. It probably has the best chance at doing 2800+ With the 1002gr before moving to modified 20mm cases. Going to need a 40" barrel to get the most out of it. Be hard to build a rifle that can get the most out of that bullet and meet the weight limit

Be hard to get more than a few reloads at those pressures. Seems once you get pass the 50K pressures all the available good 50BMG brass (RWS & Lapua) starts moving around and the primer pockets open up....Same thing happens to the 416 Barrett RUAG cases.

I'm sure that the improved versions will be able to handle a bit more pressure, but what we really need is some tougher brass.

BTW - A 40" upsized heavy Palma style 50BMG barrels (1.75" shank) comes in at around 18 lbs!

Here is video of early water barrel test of the

12ga From Hell, from years ago.

Here is picture from that video..

+1 to what Milepost said about the RUAG 416 Barrett brass. The crimped & primed version of that brass (I cut out the crimp by hand on a lathe) needs to be fired 2X at low pressures to work harden the rear end of the brass, at which time it is ok for running in the 50,000+ PSI range. If you just load it and shoot it at higher pressures you'll open the primer pockets at least 0.001 or 0.002 and up to 0.004 with each pull of the trigger. (go ahead ask me how I know) Can't talk about the unprimed and un-crimped RUAG 416 Barrett brass as I've not loaded any of it yet (sitting on 200 pieces). Having said that, the brass is pretty consistent on case volume based upon fire forming velocities, but you should plan on cleaning the necks (turning) if you want low single digit ES & SDs. The RUAG has neck thickness variance of up to 2 or 3 thou between cases (better than the standard Barrett which had neck thickness swings of up to 4 thou on the same case.)

I know you are aware, but for the others -- I've made a forming tool for my 19 ton
punch press to reform the primer pockets, extractor cut and the body up from the bottom 5/8 of an inch. I can control the pocket size to .0002/.0003 of it's original size or make it smaller.. The RWS is .3136/.3137 new. I've run a few lots that where from
+.004 to + .003 and held them to .3133/.3135. The lower body restores to .796.
Extractor is renewed to .675/.6755

Work hardening the base, that is why I make 416 HSM from fired BMG cases like we did our 700HEs, and along with fireforming round gets them so they can run 60,000 plus with right slow powders ,,Ed
