Rem.700 .308Win. (twist 1:12) for shooting at a distance over 1000 yd.?

Are you guys sure that the 26 inch VS barrels are 1-12? I thought they were 1-10...
Archery Nut you can shoot your sporter weight barreled rifle out to very long ranges, if you have a proper scope and match grade ammunition. I had a .270 Remington 700 sporter that I shot out to 800 yards with the old 6 power Mark 4 M-3 leupold scope and 135 gr SMK reloads. While I was on the target with the 135 gr SMKs 'regular' 130 gr Remington Corelock reloads (with the same powder and primer) bracketed the target at that range.
I never had steel further than 800 to shoot it at any range longer than 800 yards.

If your rifle is .308 Win try some 175 gr Federal Gold Metal Match ammunition, you may be surprised how well some of theses rifles shoot.

Good luck

Jerry

this thread is most interesting i have a rem 700 sps 26 " barrel bedded in a boyds pro varmint it will get a Timney Calvin elite soon i have loaded 130 sp hornady with great success have shot yotes at 450 yrds .....it basicly is a deer rifle , BUT would like to do some 7 8 1000 yrd shooting are we talkin the same rifle i have loaded and shot some 150 sp hornady with pretty good accuracy ....i tried some factory 168 amax and they didn't group very well . I gathering from this thread botail bullets will fly out of a 1n12 .......am very curious as to what has been done to ur factory guns to make them long rangers

Yeah the varmint sps are 1:12. The tactical sps, xcr, 5R, those style rifles are all 1:10.

Some might say the best thing to do is rebarrel to 6.5 Creedmoor...….grin.

Most of my long range shooting is field shooting, so I wanted something reasonably portable.

Here are some of the things I believe rate some thought in making the factory rifle perform it's best at long range:

- Optics and mounts: I like to choose a scope with plenty of erector travel and repeatable turrets. Those two things are more important to me than premium glass.

My choice is the SWFA fixed power 10X and 12X, and 40 or 45 moa sloped base. This combo lets me dial a direct hold out to a mile+ with the 308, and my 208 Amax load.

- Ammunition choice: There are good factory loads like the 175gr SMK and similar. I reload, so I choose the 208 Amax to optimize wind drift, retained velocity, retained energy. The long Remington throat is actually useful in this loading as I can seat the bullets far enough out to still have good powder capacity in the case.

- Bubble level: I consider this worthwhile, but some don't. The 308 has a lot of trajectory compared to some faster chamberings, so it pays to level it up.

- Laser rangefinder: Not necessary on a KD range, but absolutely needed in the field. I've been using a Leica 1200 for many years now. Finally ordered a Nikon RangeX 4K. It hasn't arrived yet, but it should really extend the distances I can shoot.

I've done plenty of other mods, mostly nice touches, not critical, and open to a lot of personal choices.

- Timney flat-shoe trigger
- Badger Ord brake
- Badger Ord triggerguard/floorplate
- McMillan stock
- Wyatt's extended internal magazine boxes
- Eagle stock pack
- Harris 9-13 swivel/notched bipod
- Red Tac beanbag
- Krylon paint (adds velocity and precision...….grin)

I've cut the barrels on mine to 20.5" and 22", then added the brakes. Gives up a bit of velocity, but helps portability/balance a little.

Here's a couple pics.

My 700 VS is box stock. It came from the factory with an HS Precision stock. It has an EGW rail (0 MOA)and an SWFA fixed 10X scope on it. The first ammo I shot through it was Black Hills Match Moly in 168 grain and 175 grain. I was surprised when the rifle showed a distinct preference for the 175's. I later tried FGMM in 168 and 175 grain flavors. Again, the 175's were the winner, despite the 12 twist.

I have shot some F-T/R matches with it and have decided upon some upgrades (haven't done any of them yet). I plan to install a Trigger Tech aftermarket trigger, upgrade to a Sinclair bipod, upgrade my optics to an SWFA 3-15x42, and bed the action into a laminated stock with a more F-Class friendly design.

If I ever manage to shoot the barrel out, I intend to go with a 5r, 10 twist. I had considered going to a 30" barrel, but I don't think there is much advantage to that with the heavier bullets. I like the factory 26" barrel length and will probably go with the same when it is time to rebarrel.

interesting
what will be the energy of the bullet at the end of this distance

I've got a Remington varmint 26" barrel running 168 amax at 2840 fps. I'm at 8100' of elevation and have taken it out to 1020yrds.

hornady case
Winchester LR primer
44gr. varget
168 amax
COAL- 2.840

usually shoots right about 1/2 minute out to 800 yards.

Just saying my 5R in my milspec 5R is 1 - 11.25 for the 20" .308

Huh...maybe it changes by year. Remington and their new models and features are different every year. They are like a less ugly version of savage :D

I'm running 175tmk's and 178eldms well over 2800fps with cfe223. in a 26" 1/12 rock creek. It runs FGMM 175's at 2704-2727 in 35 degree weather and 2754-2762 in 75 degrees. Hornady match 178hp runs the same velocities into the same group.
The 168 hunting vld Berger with varget shoots the best so far. With sub inch groups at 500yds with boring consistency. With 42.5 grn of varget in LC brass 210m it shoots 2750ish I don't have my book on the speed but I know 42.5 is what the charge is for this and the 175's.
I have not shot 4064 in this rifle yet. I live a mile from the ocean with the high humidity and typical 30.05 pressure I won't stabilize the 208's in my rifle. I would love to try the 195tmk's but I feel that they wouldn't stabilize for me either.

Great thread.
I have a mil spec 700 with the 11.25 twist barrel. I've ran the 168 amaxs and recently the eldm out to 1k. In gusty wind, they are plenty tricky.
I loaded up some 200eldx and with 41gr of varget they shot bugholes at 100. Never loaded enough to test much further.
I need to find some 208s and get my 308 competing with my 6.5

I bought a marlin 308 heavy barrel 1-12 twist 26 inch length. I just wanted something to keep my practice up. At first it would not hold groups that well. I bedded the stock and it was night and day. My best worked up load went to shooting .5moa. Good enough for me. IMR4895 168 AMAX. I don't have my notes in front of me so I don't have the charge weight. Factory seating depth as the FGMM. Runs right at 2820 fps. Makes for a really good practice round to go our and chew up some rocks at 1000yrds. Its nice to know that I may have the potential to run the heavier 175 in it after reading this thread but for now the 168's seem to work just fine. Cool thread. Also I something wish I would of spent the extra money and bought a Remington. A 1/10 twist would also be nice. But it get the job done.

Wachsmann,
I bought that same rifle for my son to hunt with a few years back and run 175 Matchkings through it. I'm also almost at sea level.
