1874 old "new" reliable.

I have a 1874 repo in 45-100, but have an idea of builtin one in a moder caliber like 338 win mag. Could this be done and if so who out there is skilled enough to do so?
 
The only rifle I know of that can handle the pressure of the modern Magnum in a falling block action is the B 78/1885 browning or the Ruger #1. Most if not all of the repo,s are designed for black powder pressures and should not be used for pressures exceeding 48,000 psi.

The B-78/1885 is my favorite action for this use and is more than capable of handling pressures of 65,000+ psi. I have owned three one in 30/06 and one in 7 rem mag and the other in 7 STW. The 7 stw had a 31" barrel and was more compact that most bolt actions because of the short action of the Browning. It would propel 140 grain bullets beyond there limits (3800 ft/sec).

I love my 1874,s but they do have there limits because of materials and design, and I don't want to damage ether with excessive pressure. Some will say it's ok but you are using up any safety margin built in
to this design.

Thanks, seen that winchester is making 1885's again but last I heard new winchester products weren't that great. Think I look into one since it's not safe for 74.

I agree that Winchester is not doing that great, and the reason I didn't mention them, The older Browning 1885's and B 78's are great. The Farquharson Action (Ruger) is strong enough, but I just like the looks of the Browning.

The Browning is a copy of the old Winchester Hi Wall and has that nostalgic look, only with modern materials other improvements.

Just an adder to the earlier post.
A good way to know if the action is strong enough to handle the magnums is if they offer there rifles in those calibers.

If not, they don,t want to take responsibility for the higher stress and pressure. If you chamber in other than they offer, they are not responsible for anything that happens.
