New Rifle Help

I have a Weatherby Vanguard II .30-06. It does have a 1 MOA guarantee that I can occasionally achieve. The gun has a few peculiarities. The composite stock puts an upward pressure on the barrel; weird, but that is the way they do it. The trigger pull is adjustable, but still heavy, but good and OK for hunting. It appears to be button rifled and original circumferential tool markings are still visible between the riflings. The barrel needs 2 or three rounds to foul and loses what accuracy it has before 20 rounds. It fouls quicker and worse than any other rifle I've owned. It took at least 300 rounds to come to a fairly accurate load. As I consider it pretty much expendable, I took it to Africa last month and took 5 animals with 6 shots, 2 for a huge kudu.
Once one knows the peculiarities it is an OK but not great gun, definitely not a first choice; I'll keep it as a spare.

Browning, Hells canyon enough said

I own both Weatherby and Browning and I love shooting them both. I am passionate about Weatherby rifles though. I own 6 of them. My first Elk hunt was with a
30/06 Vanguard shooting a 200gr nosler partition. My second was with my new 300 Weatherby magnum. It's the most beautiful gun but it weighs a ton. I really like my 257 Weatherby magnum it's light and has plenty of knock down power for any Elk. I shoot the Nosler 120gr partition out of it. My vote is a Weatherby.

Bought a Hell's Canyon Speed in 300 win mag last fall and loved it till I put a bypod on it to practice some long range shooting in the prone position,and never could get consistent with it so after alot of head scratching and trying different things I found that the stock was not near rigid enough for a bypod,I could flex it enough with just minor pressure to hold a dollar bill between the stock and barrel, pulled the stock of to have a look and it had regular cross webbing like some of the package deal guns at Walmart,very disappointed with Browning,a gun with a name like that from a company like Browning shouldn't have those problems,but sold it and bought a Sako

Sakos are great rifles also. I've got an A7 that shoots lights out.

Out of your two options the Browning, but Tikka is worth a look and also has the accuracy guarantee of 1 MOA. I have a Tikka in 6.5 Creedmoor and I have it shooting almost .5 MOA out to 600 with some quick load development. I'd look at the Christensen Arms Mesa line. It doesn't cost much more than the Brownings and is a better rifle IMO. I have one in 300 WM and have it shooting between .3-.4 MOA out to 1000. It's a great value for the money.

Just finished setting up a 3rd 300 weatherby vaguard. Floated the barrel, bedded the action, adjust the trigger pull to 3 lbs. with some tweeking. Shooting sub-moa with retumbo pushing 212 eld-x. Love the vaguard, no after market parts needed to get it to shoot really good.

RTR: I opened up the barrel channels on my X-Bolts, then roughed up the pockets between the webbing in the barrel channel (a dremel tool works wonders) and put JB weld in there.Worked like a charm. Stiffened things up and and made it so that there is no chance of a bipod affecting accuracy unless someone was sitting on your barrel. Made a big difference.

Just bought a used WBY - in .300 Win Mag - made in about 1995 - Mark 5 - with Leupold base and rings - in very good condition - $745. Any idea what the twist would be - or how accurate it might be?

It's likely a 10 twist and accuracy may well depend on how many rounds down the tube!

The barrel looks relatively new - but we shall see. Thanks.

As to the accuracy question, that is pretty silly.
You are the only one that can answer that after you shoot it.
