Power levels of 300 rum

When the RUM's came out if I am not mistaken were loaded with 3 different power levels in doing so .300wm level was an option. With that option or even in reloads would it be worth loading the Rum in that caragory instead of building a 300wm. Has anyone loaded the 300rum down to 300wm level and have good results or best to load it up and let the big dog eat? In process of finding parts for 300wm build And have seen some good deals on 300rums already set up ready to go thought maybe getting RUM and maybe have best of both worlds. Curious, thought I would ask. Thanks for any reply.

I would say that if you want the extra horse power then get the RUM. It's better to load a RUM down a notch than try to turn (load) the WinMag into a RUM.
However there are trade offs- a slow running RUM is still probably gonna burn more powder than a WinMag, probably also have more recoil, and less barrel life. If you go bigger then let that sucker run!

Just use a faster powder ( with in reason and guidelines) and " lighter " bullets and you can mock a 300wm pretty easy, that said, if it's for hunting, the full potential loads are hard to beat.

I recently reduced the velocity and subsequent recoil of my 8 1/2 lb 300 RUM. This package has a 24" barrel so you should obtain higher velocities with a longer barrel. Regardless this should give you a good comparison.

I use the 230 Berger match target hybrid . Switched from 99 gr of RL-33 with velocity of 2975 fps to 86 gr of H-1000 with velocity of 2800 fps. This should have its performance very similar to a max loaded 300 win mag.

FYI the 6 x 6 elk I shot last year was shot at 156 yd took one step and died. I am happy with the performance of this bullet regardless of the muzzle velocity. The H-1000 load is probably more temperature stable and it makes for a more pleasant recoiling rifle.

I too have been shooting the 230 Berger behind H1000 at 3006. This load is extremely accurate and deadly. In trying to make the barrel last I dropped the load one node. It is just as accurate and as deadly. This is still above win mag levels. Recoil wise it's a ***** cat with a defensive edge four port side port brake. Go for it 300 RUM!

The 300 RUM ammo actually came in 4 different power levels. Power levels 1,2,and 3 plus a managed recoil level that was comparable to a 30/06 loading. This loading had the same brass as the higher levels and was very good at shorter distances, plus you could buy it for less than you could load the other levels. My brother in law used this ammo for practice at 300 yards and found it very accurate and ended up with good fire formed brass.

clemens, if you would like an OUTSTANDING 300wm look in the classifieds. Rick Richard has one for sale that will make you droll. Beautiful and accurate, it just doesn't get any better.

Yes I saw Rick R .300wm is sweet rifle but unfortunately out of my budget. I have savage 110 7rm action for donor for the build, stock is a choate super sniper . Probably sell the stock and go different route. Was just throwing ideas out on the table thought maybe with rum could have little bit of both worlds in one package. Could be more work loading for both ends then it's worth.

Last week a fella in our Regiment brought me basically the same setup (savage 7mag with Choate tac stock) and I put a .300 WinMag barrel on it. Easy swap to do and no other mods needed. Something you could do in a matter of minutes with a pre-fit drop in ready barrel and the right tools. An ultra mag barrel will do the same, just don't know about feeding from the factory mag.

Even the light loads in a 300 RUM will get it done.

Thanks for the reply. Now you really got me thinking. Not sure if that is good thing. I'm sure if I go with rum barrel it would be single shot but that is not necessarily a deal breaker.
