25-06 to 264 win mag

Thanks for the input. I am going to go ahead with a 264 win mag. The 280ai is my next build off a savage action but hats a while different story. So how much weight savings does the carbon barrel save. Weight is a huge decision on this rifle. But I also hate waiting 2 days for a barrel to cool
In a sporter weight steels say #2 contour vs sendero orosendero light contour carbon, you'll save very little weight. Comparing the carbon to a 3b or #5 plus contour, to say a proof sendero light, you'll save close to a pound or more. My most recent build has a 26" 30cal proof sendero, manners eh6, ti action, comes in at 7#. I have a lot of hardware in the stock, could have saved a half pound there. So compare it @ 6.5# vs a rem sendero, it's 2# lighter. You can build a lighter rifle with steel vs any carbon tube avaliable as long as it's a light contour.

I have a few custom barreled rifles. Once chambered and crowned:

26" Bartlein #3b weighs about 3lbs 11oz +/-
26" Bartelin #3b fluted weighs about 3lbs 2-6oz (depending on #, depth, shape of flutes)
26" Proof Sendero weighs about 3lbs 2oz
26" Proof Sendero Light weighs about 2lbs 12oz

My suggestion: .25-06AI, 6.5-.280AI, or 6.5 Sherman.

Love the 25-06 and the 264 WM. Can I ask what you aren't liking about your Weatherby Vanguard Wilderness in 25-06? Just curious because I'm getting the bug for a lightweight hunting rifle and Wby is always at the top of my list. Love my Vanguard 25-06, but any 6.5 equivalent (6.5-06, 6.5-284) or up is going to give you way more options and will perform better at longer ranges with the bullets you have available to you.

This one just doesn't quite shoot as well as I'd like. Getting about 2.5" groups at 200. It will stack the 1st and 4th shots and stack the 2nd and 3rd shots, but those two will be about 2" apart. Which whatever everyone says cold barrel is what matters, until you have to make a follow up shot. Thought about just bedding it to see if that fixes it but I'm wanting just a little bit bigger bullet anyway. Might end up just selling this rifle and buying another

I'm sure a bedding job would help, could also be what you're feeding it...factory or handloads? Mine was pretty picky, likes H4831sc and 117 gr hornady btsp. If you decide to sell it, let me know.

Been running 115 bergers and h1000 and IMR 7977. Both right around 3075fps
Selling it is an option. Pm me if interested. Could sell it a few different ways,
Has a timney that can go or stay,
DNZ 1 piece low rings
RZR HD LH 3-15 or
Diamondback hp 4-16
100 pieces once fired win brass

If you are ok with fire forming and not correct head stamp, go 6.5 Sherman. Mine drives a 140 Berger at 3339 fps out of a 28" Hart.

25-06 to 6.5x284 is a better option IMO. You won't have to change the bolt face, Lapua brass is available, and a 264 win mag is one of the worst barrel burners on the market.

Contrary to what many think. The 264 isn't near the barrel burner people make it out to be. I've owned a few throughout the years. They are awesome. Reloading components aren't that hard to find. You can send 140s 3300fps if you want. If you're looking for a great do it all cartridge the 264 will fit that bill nicely. My current 264 wears a Brux barrel. In my opinion Brux makes some of the best barrels out there. I know a lot of guys are Gaga over Bartliens. My buddy has a couple and honestly I don't understand the hype. Do they shoot you bet. But they aren't anymore accurate than my Brux and Krieger barreled rifles.

You're entitled to your opinion. However, the consensus is these are barrel burners. A 7 mag, which I have, is over bore. This thing is obviously more because it's based off the 7 mag necked down. I don't see anyone with a 264 win mag getting more than a 1000 rounds of accuracy. In contrast, a 6.5x284 will give you 1500-2000 rounds most likely, better brass, and a cartridge that has won 1000 yard competitions. Why change the bolt face and feedings rails too. Just another headache IMO. And short Fat cases are inherently more accurate. That's all.

How many years of hunting can you get out of a cartridge is what it boils down to. My current 264 is closing in on a 1000 rounds and is still shooting 1/2moa. It all depends how fast you shoot them and heat them up. A guy that shoots 100 rounds a year or less is going to enjoy a cartridge like the 264 for at least a decade. I'd say that's pretty good. If he wants a 264 why not go for it???. Barrels aren't that expensive

I find so much wrong with what you just wrote, Patton243, I'm not sure where to begin. Truly, a collection of words bordering on ignorant.

"Consensus" isn't fact, it's a general opinion of many people. People are biased by what they know AND what they think they know.

I base my conclusions on facts, Not other people's opinions or consensus. Opinions and consensus can be wrong. Facts aren't.
Some conclusions of fact change when new data is introduced.

Just to be clear and accurate, The 264 isn't "based off the 7mm mag necked down". It's parent case is the 375 Holland & Holland, and it was released in 1958, 4 years before the 7mm mag.

The rest of your post is littered with speculation, assumptions, generalizations, and your opinion, the latter of which is ok, but only for you, and anyone willing to accept it and your set of requirements or parameters. I am not attacking you here personally, just your collection of words and their arrangement to represent something other than what they are.
Therefore, I will not be addressing any of those statements directly here.

A 264 win mag is considered overbore. That is a fact.
What makes any cartridge overbore is the relationship between powder capacity and bore size.
Where the line is drawn for overbore is subjective.
Some draw it at 1000, I draw it at 1300.

What makes any cartridge a "Barrel Burner" has more to do with how it is used and fed, and a disregard for the inherent design of the cartridge.
In other words, ignorance of facts, or improper conclusions drawn from data, and applied in a practice.

If anyone is inclined to treat things without respect, intelligence and knowledge, the resulting experience will be negative.

Modern slow burning powders have improved since the 1960's and 1970's, but apparently, opinions have not been adjusted accordingly. Parroting conclusions based on out of date data, personal bias, propaganda, etc. is wrong, and proliferates the status quo of ignorance.

Here are some overbore ratios for some long range cartridges just for reference:

300 win mag 1282
7mm rem mag 1326
300 norma 1418
264 win mag 1424
50 BMG 1480
300 RUM 1527
28 nosler 1581
26 nosler 1730
30/378 Wthby. 1813

If a man chose to educate himself, research data, and apply what he has learned, he can successfully use a tool in a manner that is not abusive to the design of that tool.

I have more, but I've spent too much time on this already .

You seem like you're butt hurt because someone is talking bad about your 264. You want facts and you're a so called expert ok... How many 1000 yard competitions did a 264 win mag win? Would you have to change the feed rails and open the bolt face up going from a 25-06 to a 264? Does Lapua sell 264 win mag brass? Is 6.5x284 Norma brass easier to find than 264 win mag brass? Is a 6.5x284 Norma more commercially recognized than a 264 win mag? Is a 264 win mag a belted cartridge that COULD have issues with brass at some point? Is a 6.5x284 more powder efficient than a 264? Does a 264 win mag have more recoil over a 6.5x284 which could hinder its accuracy potential? You're a so called expert so let me know man. I don't see too many companies selling 264 win mags either. It's a cult group and you're offended because you don't like someone's opinion. And you want to say it's good for 1300 rounds that's fine. You can shoot A 6.5x284 for about 2500 rounds then which is about the same thing you're saying. And if you want to be like the sheep and say, "barrels are easily replaceable." Well, you'll have to wait several months to get a new barrel and then another several months until a smith puts the barrel on. I can be shooting my gun 2x the amount over your 264 before I have to replace. Have a nice day.
