The Good The Bad and The Ugly About Yor 6.5 Sherman Short

Those are exactly what I was saying as well!!! The only difference is instead of his 2.990& 2.2280....mine referred to 2.940, as coal and my sst reamer print says 2.3051" to lands... your reamer printout to the sst,not my measurement

We usually end up getting there in time! Sometimes it just takes my brain longer these days:D

I said that touching the lands would be too long for me at least,to effectively run w/o setting the rifle up for the 150's with a shorter chamber. As everyone can see the 2.990" coal still doesn't put the bullet to the sst reamer print measurement to the throat...which is what I've been saying from the start...

I had reported that I wasn't able to reach the seemingly typical 3100 fps with the 147gr horn bullets loaded with 54.0gr of re26 with my 6.5sst,and had not been able to until I recently tried vih 560. To my surprise I achieved 3120+ with 58gr of the V560...I tried up to 58.8 using Br2 primers but hit a pressure spike& blew a primer at 58.8. I wanted to see if anyone else had information using the V560,and what kind of numbers they were getting. Accuracy as well as low s.d. and e.s. with the high velocities has been experienced throughout my testing & I've been super stoked with these recent results.

You should try some N570. You may get even more! I have a new reamer for it which will likely give close to 50' more at 2.9" coal.

I wish I was getting the velocities you guys are getting. I've made two 65 SS both with 26" Proof barrels, one steel and one carbon. With 140 ELD's, 140 Berger EH and 143 ELD-X's I'm between 3150 and 3190 with N570 and H1000. R26 gets me a bit over 3200. I've not gotten close to 3250 with any combination. My max loads are 59.9 H1000, 61.9 N570 and 59.2 R26. I was out today at 76 degrees and both the H1000 and N570 loads had some bolt resistance on opening.

My steel barrel is on a Kelbly Atlas and I didn't need to notch the ramp. The carbon is on a Defiance UL and I'll probably need to notch it. I'm running it on a Magpul chassis until my Manners shows up and I'll run it as a BDL for my mountain goat hunt in September.

I've got three Whidden sizing dies. I'm really not happy with any of them. The first one will stick a case every 10 cases or so. I tried every lube out there and nothing stopped it. I polished it with lapping compound and finished with Flitz in the lathe and no change. The second one is much better but the outside threads are very tight in my MEC Marksman press so I use that in the Co-ax so I don't have to thread it. I had Whidden make me one of their click sizing dies because the first two would size very inconsistently. Cases will vary .003" and an occasional .006". With the click die I can adjust the shoulder bump .001" at a time. It works but I still get variation. My testing found it depends on how much lube you use but I still can't get it consistent enough. I just measure all the sized shoulders and group them. The .003" difference shows up on the target at 100 yards.

I've been using Norma brass and, when run hard, pockets open in a couple firings. I found some Bertram 7 SAUM brass and it's much tougher. The primers are actually hard to fit even after two firings. The Bertram brass is about 20 fps slower than the Norma, though.

Regardless of the velocity, both rifles are tack drivers. I don't have targets to show like Mateo but they're darned close.

Did you get the low velocity issues worked out on either of those Proof barrels?

About to order a barrel for an SS build and need some input.

Would really like to run the 150's or the new Berger when it hits the street. Wanted to go with a carbon Proof but I'm concerned with a couple things.

I've heard of a few 150 SMK's blowing up with conventional 4 groove barrels. Anyone running the 150's out of a 4 groove at 3100+? If so what twist and barrel?

Torn on twist as well with the Proof. My barrel channel will take a Sendaro Light contour, but it looks like they only offer a 7 or 8 twist in that contour. I could go to a 24" barrel and get a 7.5, but I really don't want to give up the speed from a 26" especially if the Proofs are running slow.

7 twist is an option, but am a little concerned that it's too fast for the 140's at the potential speed of this cartridge. Anyone running 140 class out of a 4 groove 7 twist??

May just have to go with a Bartlien 5R for this and carry a little extra weight.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, that's a lot of stress. Mine is being built now with a 24" 7 twist proof sendero. I plan on shooting either 147eld, 150smk, 156 Berger, or 160 matrix. 140s are an option but if it blows em up I just won't shoot them.

How far out is your build from being done? In human months, not gunsmith months!

All of my components are there so should be 3 months.
