6.5 Creedmoor vs 7mm-08 AI

With proper shot placement the elk won't know the difference.
A 308 with a 215 Berger will have another 150ft/lbs of energy at 500 over the 7mm...and will magazine feed in savage. Just saying

Yup. In a 24" barreled savage I loaded the 215 Bergers to 2525 with Reloder 17, and they magazine feed just fine. Over 2000 ft. Lbs at 500 yards, and going over 2000 fps.

I never cared much for the 308, but now that I've matured alittle and got my head out of my butt and got off my creedmoor high I realized the 308 with the right bullet is still a heck of a round. Inside 1000 yards, it will hit harder then the 6.5 cm, 260, 7mm-08, 243 etc. You just cant run the standard 165-175 grain bullets. People are deceived when they see a 208 or 215 at 2500 fps. It looks slow, but it catches up in the long run. The real advantage the 6.5s or 7mms would be just less recoil, alittle flatter trajectory, and a little further super sonic range. I still like my creed though and I'm not changing from it anytime soon.

Hence my recommendation of the fieldcraft in a fast 7-08 running the 195's BUT only if your looking for an excuse to get another rifle...trust me your Creedmoor will kill an elk just fine, if you don't want to spend the money.

I've always loved the .308 Win. It's been a life-long favorite of mine. Same goes for 7mm-08, 7mm RemMag, and 7mm STW. Just something about them, and I'll always have at least one of each in the safe.

I may build a 308 some day for giggles. I'll probably always have a 6.5 creed and I'll definitely never get rid of my 7mm mag. That's been a family cartridge for 3 generations now. The 7mm-300 is the next one on my list.

Well a ton of great information so thanks to all for that. I have a Howa HB that shoots the Berger 185 classic extremely well. I lose about 250fps at 500 versus the Creed but pick up about 70 ft lbs of energy.

So to add to the equation a bit, how does the higher SD on the 6.5 add to penetration vs the .308 even thought there's a bit more energy. I haven't done a bunch of research but I have seen some folks who suggest that a higher SD can play a significant factor in how hard a bullet "hits"

If you use a 215 in a .308 as suggested, it has a higher S.D. than any of the 6.5 bullets. And I feel that the larger bullet diameter makes more of a difference than s.d. of a bullet. If I was hunting big dangerous game at under 400 yards, and my options were a 200 grain .338 at 3000 fps, a 200 grain .308 at 3000 fps, or a .284 195 grain at 3000, all would roughly have the same energy, but from what I have seen, the larger diameter puts animals down better.

For what ists worth I shot my mule deer last year at 630 yards with my 6.5 cm. 143eldx at 2700 fps muzzle velocity. It expanded great and I wouldn't hesitate to put one in an elk that far. There wasn't the energy transfer you see at say 200 yards or with a bigger gun but it still did the job nicely. Your 143 eldx is more then enough for an elk at 500 yards.

I agree, from what I've seen a 168gr 308 kills a deer faster than a 140gr 6.5 regardless of sd

DRT is DRT, no matter what bullet you use.

My daughter shot her big mule deer buck @ 637 yards with my 6.5SLR pushing a Barnes 127 LRX @ 3050mv. Deer dropped at the shot and didn't even twitch. Broke onside shoulder, shattered a vertebra, lungs were Jell-o, punched out the offside shoulder. Very impressive.
Approximate remaining numbers on target were 2063fps & 1200ft/lbs of energy.

I've shot deer with 12 gauge, muzzlerloaders, 243, 6mm rem, 25-06, 6.5 CM, and 7mm rem mag. To be honest with you, none of those deer could tell you what the heck they were hit by. The 243/6.5 cm put them down just as fast as my 7mm rem mag does. It's all about shot placement IMO.
Most shooters would be better off with a smaller cartridge anyway. Too many pack a cannon and flinch when they make the shot.

My grandfather has stacked up many a deer in his time. Mainly with a 7mm rem mag and a 6mm rem. He will almost always reach for the 6mm when he goes deer hunting but will occasionally grab the 7mm.
