Wolves in southern Missouri??

Wow this thread really took off. An update on wolf sign here in southern Mo.. This past rifle part of the deer season my son and I were coming out of the woods right behind my house at dark and heard them howl. My son works for the MO. Dept. of conservation. He looked at me and said ( That's wolf howls). I said I know and no one believes me. He says I do now, He also told me he hasn't told anyone but he saw one cross HWY 34 in front of his truck last year. He said it looked like a red wolf. The cattle rancher just down the road from me said he has seen 2 recent deer kills on his place like none he has seen before. He figures its wolves too. We sure don't need those things making a come back.

Here in ND, we are getting wolves from MT, MN and SK all moving in. In a few years they will meet in the middle of our state

We have reputable sightings all the time, and our F&G poo poos them. I dont trust them at all. As for is it a wolf or a coyote or a hybrid...a rancher in SE MT shot a a 90 lb wolf in his corral, and hung it in a tree next to a coyote. You will NEVER misjudge a wolf for a coyote. Google it.

Sounds like you need to go coyote hunting! If you get any 90 pound "coydog" hybrids just don't take pictures.
About those red wolfs though, in my part of Illinois alot of the coyote's I have been getting lately have alot of red in them and have really long legs for coyote. Dad says they look alot different then they did 25 years ago. shooting a 45 pound male isn't uncommon now, I

they way they look is result of their environment, food and maybe species crossing.

6-7 month old thread but - it's common knowledge that there are wolves [hordes] in minnesota wisconsin michigan .
I'd be willing to bet if there was a way to prove it that there are wolves in at least 40 states .
I saw one while hunting over the carcass of a dead feral hog here in bay county , florida [panama city beach] . A big lanky grey and black wolf - broad daylight .
I saw a mountain lion in 1978 in sw ohio warren county near wilmington , saw a red wolf in 1979 north of texarcana Ar. too .
Have seen bear/bobcat tracks in warren and clinton counties of ohio at the grandparents place - but ''they'' aren't there I hear .

People all over the country own "domesticated" wolves some of which are allowed to run loose and some of which escape. Reckon they might be breeding or breeding into the local coyotes?

I remember here in Idaho, F&G personnel dismissing reports about 1st, wolves significantly impacting game populations and 2nd, wolf sightings in the lower part of the state. Of course it wasn't long before there was no disputing both counts and their tunes changed but sometimes I think they're sent talking points from higher up, on how to respond to certain controversial topics. Nothing else howls like a wolf but there are plenty of domestic stock animals that will be easy pickings for a wolf if there is a developing population.

Undoubtedly. I had a buddy who was a gov't trapper in NM who played hell with wolf/coyote and wolf/dog hybrids for years. There are no 80lbs 6' long coyotes but he killed half a dozen of them all in the span of 3 years in the same area. He and the state game biologist were convinced they all probably came from the same litter or maybe same parents, two consecutive litters.

All of the canines can interbreed successfully so when fluffy goes wandering, he or she may very well be adding to the gene pool so to speak.
