Remington 5R advice

rifle should ship to my FFL next week, already ordered a timney trigger, a glass bedding kit, a torque wrench, and a vise. already had a leupold one piece rail and some vortex tactical rings for the scope. I'll get pics up as soon as I get it all together.

The only thing I don't like about 5Rs is that stupid palm swell. I wish they would use the sporter or hunter series HS stocks.

I agree, but that's not just 5R's, it's all of the newer HS Precision stocks...Including the Sendero and other models. HS needs to go back to the old HS Precision style stocks, with no palmswell.

I have the old style on my 5R and really like it a bunch.

I don't think your problem is with HS Precision. They offer plenty of stocks without the large palm swell. The model 700 5r and Sendero SFII utilize stocks from HS with palm swells, but that's a Remington decision and has nothing to do with HS. I'm sure they'd be happy to supply Remington with whatever stock options they are willing to pay for.

On a personal note, for shooting off of a rest/bag or an improvised rest in the field, I quite like the wider palm swell. For a light weight mountain rifle I'm shooting off hand or maybe with a bipod, I could see not wanting it, but I'd probably also not have a heavy barrel in that rifle for weight savings. It's all about personal choices, unless you're Remington and choose to put the palmswell stocks on your rifle offerings. HS chooses to do what they are asked to do by their customer- they'd be happy to sell a non-palmswell stock to anyone who wants one.

I have the hunter series with the wide, flat forend but the slim grip on the back. It's on a Remington 700 .243 varmint, and that is one nice stock. The 5Rs would be perfect if they had that style.

HS made it, Remington bought it. Remington's only fault is being stupid enough to buy those uncomfortable things. The whole reason they're doing it is because of that stupid trend where people keep shooting with the thumb to the side, instead of the traditional thumb-over the top grip. It's just like that retarded new grip-style that people are doing with their AR's where they're holding it like a gorilla gripping a tree limb with their hand wrapped almost over the top of the handguard... It just looks stupid, and is uncomfortable, and is just as useless and trendy and the thumb to the side grip style for bolt-actions. It's like people come up with this crap just to see how many braindead idiots they can get to follow them and imitate... Monkey-see, monkey-do. It's like they think, "If I do that, people might think I'm a real Operator..." Instead they just look stupid.

As I mentioned before, I quite like it for my needs. Am I stupid and brain dead or an idiot? I don't think so, neither do my family, friends, or coworkers, or clients.

Choices are a wonderful thing. Again, if you don't like the stock Remington has chosen to supply with their rifles, change it. Bashing another company for providing Remington what they want isn't productive, and neither is bashing the people that prefer things that are outside of your personal choices. I'm sorry the current production rifles on offer from Remington come with a stock you don't care for. Vote with your dollars and maybe in a few years I will be the one having to buy a new stock to replace the one that comes in the rifle I buy because it doesn't fit my interests or needs. I did this recently when I replaced the B&C stock in the 700 Long Range with an HS Precision 5r takeoff. Should that scenario arise where your preferred stock is sold on new rifles and mine is no longer available, I guarantee one thing- I won't be calling you stupid or brain dead because your opinions differ from mine.

I never said you were... I said it seems these days that most people are just copying what they see others doing, and because someone on youtube said it was the best way, that automatically means they believe it and start imitating it.

Bashing another company? Give me a **** break. I'm not bashing HS, I'm bashing their stupid choice. Remington made just as stupid of a choice by using those stocks.

After nearly 20 years of Remington using them, my preferred HS Precision stock was REPLACED by the new ones that I don't like. I have 3 of those stupid stocks, and can't afford to replace them right now. Anyone want to buy them? 2 long-actions, 1 short-action. 1 LA is DevCon bedded, the others are not. The other LA stock is brand new, as the rifle has never been shot.

Don't take things so personal. I'm not calling you braindead or stupid... Atleast not directly. Just like choices, opinions will also differ, and all are just as relevant or irrelevant as the next, depending on how someone wants to look at it.

I, too, have one of the Gen 1 300 WM, along with the 223, & 308. Personally the best thing I did with my 300WM was to have the barrel threaded & a brake installed. Much nicer to shoot now! As far as the HS stocks, I guess I'm the "Odd Guy Out", as I have no problem with the 'stupid' palm-swell everyone hates. With it & a wide shoe Timney trigger, my trigger finger is positioned nicely, for good trigger pull. But, to each-his-own, I guess. Congrats on your new 300WM, & Good Luck with it. I'm sure you'll enjoy it!!!!!!

I absolutely love the palm swell.

If the only complaint is a palm swell then that sounds like a pretty solid rifle.
