Sako extractor troubles

I'm thinking the material used to fill the space that was taken up by the old Remington extractor is to thick and not allowing the Sako extractor to hold onto the case rim long enough. Below are two pics of my Sako extractor. Notice my Smith didn't use fill material and the extractor has worked flawlessly for over 700 rounds. You can see how much more grip the extractor has.

that makes sense. he chucked it back up in the lathe when i took it to him to see why it wasnt ejecting cases properly and opened it up a little more.

what caliber is yours? mine is a .308 bolt face

Just by looking at it I can tell the depth of cut for the sako extractor is off. The extractor should sit deeper so the lip of the extractor snaps fully over the rim of the case. Here is my 308 bolt face with sako extractor. Notice how much lower the extractor sits. It works flawlessly every time.

thanks for the input, i'll see if my smith can measure the depth and take it a little deeper.

For a 308 bolt face I run the extractor depth .165" If the depth is off, the plunger hole is probably off too. To be fixed correctly the plunger hole should be plugged and re-drilled.

didnt even think about the plunger, thanks again for the help.

i'm thinking i may just send this off for a redo. the silver soldered ring that was installed looks like crap. the same smith blueprinted the action for me, it shoots great and it's still got the factory barrel on it. he's done a bunch of other stuff on guns for me, so i dont know what happened with this.
