I have a sako 75 with 27" 1:8 Krieger #5 in 7mm WSM, and a McMillian stock scheduled to be delivered in about a month. My next choice will be an optic. This is primarily a hunting rifle and based on my calculations I'll be able to get good expansion out to 850 +/- yards on deer sized game (175 ELDx or 180 Berger) The two scope makes I am looking at are 1. Nightforce SHV either the 4-14x50 or 5-20x56 2. Leupold LRP 4.5-14x50 or 6.5-20x50. with moa adjustment and moa reticle. I have narrowed my search down to these two makes. Please don't recommend anything that starts with V and ends with ortex. Any info on those two make and model scopes would be great!

I really like the Nightforce SHV's, but the eye relief is a little iffy for me. But, I'm 62 and don't have the best eyesight to beging with, so It's even more finicky for me.

How about instead of the lrp going to a vx5hd? Not much price difference, and optically the vx5 appears a touch better to me. I picked one up a couple months ago and have been very happy with it.
I have several shv and a couple vx3's, to my eyes the shv has better resolution than the vx3's do and I prefer the moar retical that nightforce has to any leupold offering, which if using the retical for holdovers seals the deal for me.

What practical difference is there between the moar reticle and the tmoa/impact reticles? For holdovers the cascading dots provide great references for wind

I have shot and looked through both your scope options and would definitely prefer the SHV. While the LRP is a quality optic, the SHV had better glass quality and construction IMO. I personally prefer MRAD over MOA, finding that it is much easier to keep track of my corrections when they are in bases of 10 instead of 4. Out of your two power choices, in whichever one of the two you select, I would go with the higher powers (20x). While it is possible to make shots at around 1000 yards with 14-16x, it is much easier with powers over 20x (unless the goal is a pure lightweight rifle, in which case the 14-16x will save you some weight).

Could not agree less...the LRP glass to me is very good--where I find most nightforce glass not near as crisp except the ACTAR. I like the capped knobs on the SVH over the big elevation knob on the LRP. I had one Nightforce SHV--and traded it--I still have 2 LRPs that should tell you how I think.

If you opt for the SHV I would go with higher magnification and get the model with the MOAR reticle and exposed elevation turret.

The LRP are nice scopes- I have the TMOA reticle on two Leupolds and found that it works great at distance. Just keep in mind the MOA holdovers won't be perfect except at top magnification (20x). They will be double at half magnification (10x) which makes for an easy reference at closer distances.

If you look you can find a VX6 3-18x50 with TMOA for the same price range as the models you listed and I've even seem some used 4-24x at the high end of that range. Keep in mind these are the "HD" models. I have the 3-18 TMOA on my 6.5x284 and it fits that 700-800yd distance perfectly.

Auodad shooter1975: I guess that's why there is more than one scope on the market! Everyone will have their own preferences and opinions on an scope. In an ideal world the best thing for anyone to do is find someone who has the scope and test it out by using it before buying it.

I would second the vx5hd option take a look at one they are nice, great glass, locking turrets and light since this is a hunting rifle.

Zeiss Conquest V4 6-24x50 with the #91 reticle.

Also, what's your deal with not liking Vortex? I have tons of their stuff and not a problem...Even on rifles with no brakes like two 7mm STW's and a .300 Ackley...

I used to like Leopold many many years ago, until I realized there was MUCH better options out there. I know there's the diehards out there that will want to crucify me for saying this, but I don't care. My opinion is my opinion based on personal experiences with them. They are close-to-mid distance hunting scopes, not LR hunting or tactical scopes. They have "tactical" scopes, but they're nothing more than modified hunting scopes. And when you try to hybridize something and create a chimera, it doesn't automatically make it do both functions well...Usually it sacrifices on both ends, and ends up not doing either function well. In the world of high-quality and LR hunting optics, the only thing Leopold still has going for them are their name, and their warranty... Same with Schmidt & Bender, but their CS is a nightmare to deal with.

x2 with mudrunner on the Zeiss option. I looked at the V4 this weekend side by side with SHV and LRP at the Cabelas down here. The elevation turret feels great! Windage is capped but has a zero reset underneath and the glass is dang good. ZMOA illuminated reticle is slightly thicker than the SHV and the TMOA which will make it easier to see in low light. Strong contender for the price point-- if you can get all 3 outside for a side by side comparison you'll have your answer!

I have the 5-20 SHV on my .300wm but it's a heavy rig I packed around for my hunting. I'm going with the vx5hd 3-15x44 with the impact 29 reticle for my next rig (6.5-284) going lightweight this go around.lol.

Check the vx5 out....75 moa adjustment and only 19.2 ounces
