270 Shooters still exist????

For about the last 40 years I have loaded for 6 different .270 Win., a 700 Rem. ADL, a push feed Mod. 70 Win. 2 Mod. 70 stainless classics, a pre- 64 Mod 70, and a Weatherby Vanguard 2, between my 4 sons, daughter-in-law, grandson, and myself we have harvested several dozen deer and several elk, my next to oldest son has harvested around 15 elk with 2 different .270 Win's, all with one shot. The last elk I harvested with my .270 Win. Mod 70 push feed was at 305 yds., one shot, the farthest I have shot a elk. Almost all of the 270's I have loaded for will shoot nicely with anywhere between 54 and 55.5 grs. of IMR 4350 behind a 130 gr. bullet, both the Mod 70 stainless classic and the Weatherby Vanguard 2 will shoot sub minute of angle 5 shot groups from the bench with 55.5 grs. of IMR 4350 behind a Speer 130 gr Spitzer Boat tail in Win. cases, this load produces 3038 fps with extreme spread of 37 fps out of 24" barrels. Sierra, Nosler, and Win. 130 gr. bullets shoot very well also and work especially for deer and smaller animals, but the Speer 130 gr. SPBT is my choice when using a .270 Win. on elk. I will add that this bullet gets complete penetration on the elk I have seen harvested with it and almost never recover a bullet.

any body try a faster 1-8 twist on 270 win for heavier bullets? like the berger 170 gr?.... creedmore gets all the attention....i cant see why a heavy for caliber 270 win wouldn't be as or more bad ***.... after all it's pretty much been king of the west for decades with 130-150 gr projectiles

I've always wondered how the Barnes 130 would do on Elk. Can you expand on your experience with that? I used the 130 SST on a cow elk once and it came apart inside the shoulder. Still got the cow, but I was left wishing for a better bullet.
The Barnes hold together, l been found bullets, but they usually pass though .

I think we need to post some pics of these great guns......
Took me a few days to get to it, but here are a couple of pics of the .270win I described in post #2 of this thread. I am really happy with how it turned out, as you could tell from my post #2. It basically looks bone stock, except the original 1970s era ADL came with iron sights and a gloss finish on the press checkered stock. The Shilen has no iron sights and when refinishing the stock we went with a satin finish, actually recut real checkering into the stock, and installed a more comfy recoil pad. I love this rifle. It's not as practical in all conditions as some of my others in HS or Magpul stocks with detachable magazines, or with massive Vortex Razor or PST Gen II, or NF ATACR scopes, but it is a simple, pure, go get a deer now rifle setup with a nice little 3.5-10 VX3 and it shocks the crap out of everyone who sees or shoots it because of how accurate and easy to shoot it is. I also like the ADL blind magazine- no need to worry about the bottom metal falling open, and it's one less thing to clean when I bring it home.

Again, probably the one of the most expensive factory looking ADL setups I've ever seen, but I wouldn't change a thing about it.

I have liked the 270 Win for years. My first big game rifle was a Ruger 77 in 270 Win.. bought in the early 1980's. That gun would shoot three bullets into less than and inch with factory Federal 130's and it did the same with many of my reloads. If fact I shot so many load in the gun that I shot out the barrel and replaced it with and E.R. Shaw 270 Win. I had so many different gun that I started giving some to my grandsons so I gave that rifle to one of them. After some time I missed the 270 Win so much I bought a Weatherby Vanguard in 270 Win. That gun also shoots very well with the correct load. A few months ago I was in a local gun shop and spotted a Winchester Model 70 featherweight in 270 Win.. I could not get that gun out of my mind until I bought it. It is a used gun in very good condition with a Leupold scope. I am in the process of work up a hunting load and I have found that to my surprise that this Winchester will also shoot. I have to keep my groups to three shot because the barrel heats up so fast. I have shot many 3 shot groups of less that .75 inches. My latest load is 130 Nosler Accubond,58 grains H4831, in Norma case and CCI-200 primers. This is my out to 300 yards hunting load.

I forgot to mention that I also bought a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 270 WSM over 10 years ago.

Here is a 3 shot group @ 100 yards with my Browning X-Bolt in .270 using hand loaded 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. I am sighted in 2" high at 100 yards and since I was dealing with a slight crosswind, I decided against making any windage adjustments to my scope.

I just sold the Browning as I didn't like the noise of the BOSS and just picked up a Sauer Classic 100, also in .270, to replace it. This is primarily for hunting purposes for which I hope it shoots Hornady 130 grain factory loads well. For a fun side project, I did pick up Nosler LR 150 grain bullets with a B.C. of .625 to see if I can find a load that works well for long range shooting. We will see!
