338-375 Ruger Demon

how did you guys make out 8x68 brass ? would it be worth doing a reamer on that instead ?

That question falls in elkaholic's realm of specialty. I'm very happy with my 8x68S brass, fireformed to the 30/375 SI chamber dimensions. I consider the RWS brass to be slightly stronger in the case head, with a little better dimensional uniformity - compared to the Norma 8x68S brass.

But either RWS or Norma spanks the Hornady 375 Ruger brass for quality and consistency, based on my limited experience to date. Beware that some magnum bolt faced actions will not extract the 8x68S cases reliably - or at all. Need to confirm this as a go or no-go before purchasing 8x68S cases. My action (BAT Hunter Repeater) is extracting without any problems/issues.

I haven't had time to do any follow up. As phorwath said though, the brass is much better and extraction is still unproven? My BAT seems to work well also. If I we're building with options, I would just have the bolt opened to the 8x68 spec.

thanks guys looking to replace my 270-338 RUM IMP when this barrel is cooked. was going to have a standard bolt opened up for extraction. 108 gr H2O is just to much for the 270.

I'm going to give 300 Win brass a try in my 375 Ruger. Not because I don't like the Hornady brass. Mostly because it will be nice to have another source of brass the next time brass supply gets all screwed up.
With my Hornady die the expander button opens the neck of the 300 brass up in 1 pass.
As my rifle is a Guide Gun with controlled feed . Fireforming is pretty easy. Plus I set the shoulder with the die . So it should headspace great on the shoulder.
If it works out well I'll report back.

You do understand that the belt is the only thing on a 300wm that is the same size as the 375 Ruger? The body of a 300wm case below the belt is .513 not .532 like a Ruger.

Also the 8x68 is about .010" under the size of a 375 Ruger case t the base. RWS 6.5x68 Schuler brass in my improved chamber is almost identical in capacity to my 6.5-300wm cases. I can't imagine you not losing quite a bit of capacity using the 8x68 in a 30-375 SI. The 375 Ruger is about 8grs more capacity then a 300wm.

Isn't the capacity of the fire formed 8x68S case in the 30-375 SI the pertinent comparison to Hornady 375 cases formed to 30-375 SI?

I don't understand the significance of the comparison of capacities of the unadulterated parent brass, when the internal volume of the parent case will be enlarged to the wildcat cartridge dimensions???

Am I missing something?

elkaholic already measured the capacities of the 30-375 SI with the Hornady 375 Ruger, Norma 8x68S, and RWS 8x68S parent cases. Very little difference between the three.

But big difference in strength and consistency, based on my initial experiences.

Here's a picture of the 8x68s case on the left and a 375 Ruger case on the right to give some scale to folks not really familiar with it. Once fireformed the 8x68s works well for Ruger based wildcats if you're able to work around the smaller diameter rim.

Are you going to do a SI version of this?

Good to see this thread getting revived yet again.

Yorke and Jasent both inspired me to build a 338-375 Ruger. I actually bought my reamer from AZshooter. My build was based off a savage action. So far I've had great luck with 76.5 gr of H4350 and 250gr Accubonds, average speed was 2912fps over 5 shots and 3/4" at 100. I've put 40 or so rounds down the barrel but have some more loads ready. I tried 250gr Berger Elite Hunters 20k off the lands and the groups and speeds were all over the place. I have them loaded touching the lands now and 2k off so we will see how they do.

I have finished my new wildcat 338-375 ruger (Demon). I am wondering if anyone has some good loads they have worked up for thiers. The two I have found that work well are:
CCI mag primer. 93 gr. Vihta Vuori N570. 250gr hornady hpbt. 3120 fps.
CCI mag primer. 90 gr. MRP2. 250gr. hornady hpbt. 3050 fps.

Either way its got the Lapua with the same grain of bullet in a factory load beat.
It's already been made, yearrrssss ago. It's called the .338 Campfire.
