Building off of a savage action

I see that quite a few folks have built very good shooters from standard Savage actions. I don't own a Savage, but I am not surprised by the results posted here.

A good friend of mine recently purchased a Savage rifle chambered in .260 Remington. It is one of the Savage Target actions (repeater, not single shot) with the HS Precision stock and the Target version of the accutrigger. I am very impressed with it.

Based on what I have seen, if I were to ever build on a Savage action, the Savage Target would be my starting point (assuming the choice of a short action chambering).

"If you walk down the firing line of F-Class competitions, the overwhelming majority of what you see will be out-of-the-box Savages or modified Savages, or true custom rifles built on the Savage action"

100% pure lie

You are correct...but once you eliminate the full custom guns of top tier competitive shooters with Kelbly etc actions, and look at the next tier of shooters, indeed the Savages are dominant, at least at the matches I've attended.

Well guys, got my building block. It's a 10SBA, 308, 10 twist, 20 in barrel.
First order of business is a stock. I first considered a Boyds AtOne, and Pro varmint.
At this point , I'm leaning toward a Bobby Hart, from Stockys.
As it came,it shot a .4 group, using 175 Sierras, a d a throw together handload. This barrel is sweet.

My dad put a Bobby Hart lrp on his 22-250 AI build. Sweet stock and very comfortable to shoot with

Creed,
I actually have had one, in tawny brown, on a long action Remington. Didn't even bed it, it shot lites out, day one.
If I recall, it actually had pillars, on both ends, and the inletting, was very tight. Loved it.
I'm thinking thats the way I want to go.

My dad's has pillars in it. He did bed the recoil lug area on his.

Really lovin this SAVAGE guys. So much potential, and the quality is far more then expected.
Now that I've broke the ice, can't wait to get my hands on a long action.
Gotta get this one right first.

I recently installed a Timney ($104-blued) to replace the Accutrigger in my 6.5x284 LRH. The OEM trigger was nice but lowest that I was able to adjust it was 2 1/2 pounds and I wasn't crazy about the feel of the trigger safety. Installing the Timney took less then 10 minutes. It has a sear, safety, and weight adjustment. There is no trigger safety. I really like this trigger. At 1 1/2 pounds, it's a very crisp, clean break, and very consistent.

Ok guys...where the gun porn?

You can' keep talking about a stock/gun without pictures!

You know the saying...."didn't happen if there's no proof to prove it!"

Good to hear. I put a Sav-2 trigger in my 6.5x284 and like it. I don't however have a trigger pull gauge, but I think it's around 2#'s.

Question- at 1.5#s, do you think there's any risk for involuntary firing if dropped, etc?

That was a major concern when I purchased the Timney. IMO, if the instructions are followed, a safe trigger can be achieved. I haven't dropped the rifle to test the trigger but I did make a point to cycle the action numerous time very rigorously, and hitting the rifle butt on floor ptretty hard to test for accidental release.. I also spent time cycling the safety in all positions while pulling the trigger while on safe. I have had no involuntary releases of the sear(firings). I have shot the rifle on several outings with no issues. Unlike the Accu-trigger, there are safety and sear adjustment screws. I did not need to adjust the sear screw, but did have to tune the safety "after" the desired poundage was set. Not difficult, but important. Some other important points. Do not try to set the trigger lighter then 1.5#. Use a trigger gage! The sear has to be under a certain about of spring pressure. The sear will release if the trigger bar is pressed when the barreled action is out of the stock since the trigger bar is exposed. Unlike the Accutrigger, there is no trigger safety on the Timney to prevent firing. For this same reason, like the Accutrigger, it's important to be sure that the trigger assembly/trigger bar does not make contact with any portion of the stocks interior. Overall, I prefer the Timney over the Accutrigger, and I'm confident of its safety.........As with "any" trigger/firearm, practicing safe gun handing is important.

Capt,
If you're referring to my gun, I have some pix of gun, and targets. But, I'm computer stupid, and am not good at adding it to the site.
Pm me you're cell number, I'll send them to me in a text. If you could add them, that would be cool.
I have a pretty cool psint scheme that I experimented with. It came out surprisingly well. Would love to share it.
THANKS. 7
