Shooting rifle

@ Greyfox and OP,.. you MAY want to compare your Calibers of "choice", to the .270 WSM with, the 140 Berger Classic Hunter going 3,200 FPS at 3,000 ft. Elev., BC of, .528 and a 200 yard zero, it's dropping only, 15 inches at 400, 30 inches at 500, 80 inches at 700 and 213 inches at 1,000 yards ! And doing IT with, REASONABLE Recoil using, a LimbSaver and way less than that with, a Brake on it. Sure beats the .308 Win,.. IMHO !

I chose 308 because I wanted a long barrel life and something cheap to reload. I would like the 6,5 CM, but where I live I have very few things to buy in this caliber.

I know people with bad opinion about the Bergara HMR. They consider that it is not very accurate. I don't know I've never used it.

@ Greyfox,. I did NOT say the .308 Win. was inaccurate! It is, an "accurate" caliber but, has an trajectory ARC like,.. a "Rainbow" after a few hundred yards and for targets PAST 600 yds, I'd go with something, "FLATTER" for the distance the OP wants, but hey,.. that's MY .02 cents ( opinion). As far as Magazines go, my .270 WSM feeds like butter with,.. BOTH of my Magazines ! I'd buy another Tikka in a heart beat, in either 6XC or 6 mm Creed,.. calibers,.. LEFT Handed of course IF they would make it ! I will be building, a 6XCII, on my SA model 700 L-H action with the barrel and chambering costing about, the price of,.. ONE, New Tikka,.. sadly.

My post wasn't directed at, nor intended to dispute your comments about the basic capabilities of the 308 compared to other cartridges. Sorry if you interpreted it that way. I just wanted to show the basic performance I have experienced with the Remington Mil-spec since the OP expressed his desire for the 308. I personally agree with your comments about using a flatter shooting cartridge for 1000 yard hunting.

I won't use the rifle for hunting. I will carry it across the mountains, but not for hunting.

Bergara HMR 6.5 CM is a tack driver. My first load development 4 of 7 loads were same hole. The other 3 were under 1 inch.

Hi

I'm looking for a new and accurate rifle for target shooting at 800-1000 meters in 308W. But I would like a rifle not extremely heavy to carry it across the mountains too.

I am between two options right now:

Remington 700 milspec 5r: 2000 €
Tikka T3 Super Varmint: 1500 € (I dislike a bit its plastic magazzine)

What would you choose? It's worth spending more on the Regminton? I'm interested specially in the accuracy. Do you have better recomendations than this rifles with the same budget?
I went through a similar dilemma recently and went with the 5R gen 2 in 300 win. Unfortunately I haven't shot it yet but my initial report is the action is super smooth, especially when compared to other 700's I've handled. Fit and finish are perfect, barrel falls dead center in the barrel channel, threaded barrel and HS stock from the factory are HUGE pluses to me (that you won't get on the Tikka). Plus the 700 IS the king of customization so if you plan on doing much to it, I'd definitely go 700. The market is pretty slim for Tikka.

With this example the Bergara is comparable in accuracy to a Savage FTR or Rem Milspec. I'm confused, because all people from America talks very well about Bergara HMR, but I have heard other opinons not so good. Maybe the quality of this rifle is not the same in other countries compared to the USA?

tmmcampbell shared his real-world experience with his Bergara HMR 6.5CM, what you do with it is entirely up to you. That goes with any recommendations from any of us. We can only advice, you have the ultimate responsibility in the decision-making process and the consequences associate with it, regardless what you've heard or read, good or bad.

On your initial post, I'd take the Tikka, but now that you've added the Savage FTR above in the mix. That is now my choice. Their out of the box accuracy is hard to beat and they are most DIY friendly.

Cheers!

Today there are not many rifles advertised as accurate that won't shoot boxed ammo under 1 moa. Most will shoot some flavor of boxed ammo into quite a bite smaller than that. If serious target shooting is the game the Savage FTR out of the box is going to be hard to beat in 308. The 30" barrel has advantages you just can't get from a 24" when targets a long ways are the goal. My 26" runs Fed gold metal match and Hornady match 175 and 178's at 2708-2753(both brands shot cold bore at 2708-9 so far)

Could you explain that for me Cap? I mean the advantage the 30" long barrel would have for shooting a long way with a 308?

Your going to get more velocity out of a 30" vs a 24" barrel all else being equal. In shooting with a buddy 2 weeks ago my 26 rock creek shot 2727 fps avg velocity for gmm ammo. His 24" 5r shot the same box at 2586 avg velocity. Both rifles produce roughly the same size group and both rifles had similar extreme spreads. The extra velocity will help as distance grows with wind adjustments. Add more barrel get more speed. It also adds more weight to help keep the rifle more stable through the recoil impulse. The better you mange the recoil impulse the more consistent you are. The more consistent you become the more accurate you are.

Well is it also not true that there can be velocity differences between two same length barrels from the same maker? We are talking a 308, how much barrel is required in order to obtain max velocity with that amount of powder? As for Savage, do they not also market a 338 Lapua with a 26"?
