AR-15 6.Something Gasser

I picked one of these up last time I needed a Bolt carrier for a 223, just so I could have a back up Grendel bolt. Cheapest I could find at the time, though Monmoth has them on sale for around $110.00 sometimes. You will like the Grendel.......combined with a collapsible stock and low power scope, its a real nice youth gun! I have run BHW, Odin, and Satern barrels. Best were Satern than Odin. I have a cut rifled Satern that I need to get out and see what it will do, but the Liberty line of barrels are well under MOA barrels with factory ammo. (I have used 4 of their 18" fluted barrels, and all meet this!)

BTW..... I really like E-Lander mags. Some of the older C-Product mags don't feed well. LaRue has the best price on E-Lander

For the record, you will NEED to know whether your barrel requires a Type 1, or Type II bolt. The headspacing it different.

The Satern barrels that I linked to in the other 6.5G thread posted this evening, are Type II chambered, and come with a matching and properly headspaced bolt. That way all you will need to provide is a carrier, and pop the new bolt head in the carrier, mount the new barrel, toque to spec, and you're good to go. That easy.

BTW, I have a few older C-Products Grendel mags... The 5-rounders were so tight on the 5th round, I thought it was gonna pop out on its own... So, through trial & error, I cut either one or 2 links off the mag spring (till I got the tension where I wanted), and it allowed the 5th round to fit nice and had no excess tension on it, allowing it to pop down about 1/8" below the feed lips. Feeds perfectly now, and you can load the mag in the mag well fully loaded without any excess tension pushing it back out and not seating properly...Snaps right in.

I'm going to get a few of those E-Lander mags, but **** they're expensive... Nearly twice what the C-Products mags are/were.

I've since given it to my son, after putting a little over 130 rounds thru it.

It will easily do sub-1" groups with preferred loads.

True on the chamber! The screen shot of barrel ordered says type 2, which is a actual Grendel bolt, NOT a 7.62x39. Make sure you are buying the correct one! I called before ordering mine to confirm, as its not always called out.

Same barrel I have on mine. Nothing wrong with it at all, very accurate for the price. But after having it for almost 3 years, and carrying it around and shooting it, I feel my rifle would suit my needs better with a 20" barrel, instead of the 24". So I've been thinking about with this year's tax return, upgrading to a TRUE match-grade cut-rifled barrel... OR, ordering myself a nice birthday present (Rem 700 5R Gen2 .260 Rem)...

I really wanted a Krieger bbl, but was limited on funds for this build so I went with the Brownell's premium barrel.

I chose the 24" because I wanted to maximize range/ballistics. I've gotten over 2600 fps with the 123 gr bullets.

I got a bolt carrier group coming from Midway USA for $99.99 so once I get the barrel I should have it up and running pretty quick.

I seen on ebay they have a labeling (if that' a word) band that you put on the mags to ID them....any one using anything like that?

For Grendel mags Elander is the best but cost the most. I have one Stoner mag from Midway and it works perfect and I have some ACS mags and they work great. I have two AR Grendels and the mags work in both perfectly. Go over to 6.5grendel.com and join the forum. If you are a member you can get in on some group purchases. On the forum page scroll down toward the bottom and you will see a tag (group buys) the have right now Faxon 18" barrels shipped for $179 and really good bolts for $55.

Larue tactical sells E-Landers for $17.00.....thats only a couple bucks more than Midway Stoner mags. My brother gave me a couple of the caliber bands, and I will probably order more. They seem to be decent quality. I like the visual confirmation that I'm grabbing a Grendel mag, as well as a bit of a grip when grabbing the mag.

CaptnC the barrel that you got is made by Bear Creek Arsenal and they are a crap shoot as to accuracy. Most all of them need to be shot 50 to 100 rounds to get them to start grouping. In my research I have found that people cut down on the number of shots required to get them to start grouping they run a patch with JB bore paste about 50 passes down the bore to hand lap the ruff spots out. My first Grendel was a complete upper from Bear Creek Arsenal and it had a bad barrel, every shot was a flier. I had to send it back to them and they replaced the barrel. It took about 60 rounds to get it to start grouping and so far 1" groups with a certain hand load is about the best accuracy. It absolutely HATES Hornady 123 SST factory ammo. About 3" at 100 is the best with it. I built another Grendel using an Oden Works 18" barrel and it is a tack driver, well under the guaranteed 1 MOA accuracy. But it cost 3 times what your barrel did. If you hand load IMR 8208 with 120 Sierra Pro Hunter, Hornady case, CCI 450 or BR-4 primer, work up toward the max load of 28.5 grs is the most accurate in both my rifles so far. 18" barrel runs 2553 fps 20" 2575 fps. I just started fooling with the Grendel this past February but have decided to use nothing but my ARs to hunt with this coming year if nothing else to PO a liberal. I read your thread early this morning. I came to the same conclusion that the barrel I bought was a Bear Creek Arsenal. I can live with a 1" at 100 yard gasser for now. This build is for the grand kids. They are pretty young so they would be fine with a MOA of dead deer grouping rifle.

And I can always replace the barrel and use the BCA barrel for tomatoe stake!
