Hi all,

I have a 270 Weatherby Mag Mark V that needs a new barrel. I am thinking about re-barreling into a 7mm STW. I plan on using this rifle for elk and mule deer in my home state of MT. The trigger has been reworked by a good smith so happy with it. The stock is an older Pacific Labs that has been bedded and barrel free floated, so not planning to change this. It currently has a Douglas barrel that is 24 inches. I am also a reloader.

I would like your help with:
  1. What is the COL when loading Bergers/ELDX or similar bullets?:
  2. Bullet weights recommended for elk and mule deer:
  3. Barrel recommendations: Lilja, Shilen, or ???
  4. The rate of twist recommended:
  5. Barrel length recommended: 26 inches
  6. Is a Brake recommended: Yes/No
  7. If Brake recommended what would you recommend:
  8. Is there anything about this re-barrel that would be good for me to know?
I appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Josebigsky

--8" twist
--26" or more bbl. length
--any of the major brands for BBL... I am running a 27" shilen (#5 contour) with a 8" twist
--with 175 eld-x I am at 3.81" OAL- pushing these with a stout dose of 50BMG
--a brake is not necessary but if you want to cut weight and go with a trim bbl. (like a #3 contour) it may cut recoil- I'd do a radial like a Vias if I were to brake mine
--if your action is a mk5 you will need a bit of mag. well work as the 270roy has partition in the mag. -- not as big deal but you will not be able to go much over 3.4" with it in
-- bullet weights- 140 grain and up; currently my standard load is a 140nos AB with 82 rl25 in rem. brass with a 215; my newer load is the 175eld-x with 50BMG in Bertram brass with a 215

Ive looked at 7 stw before seems like a laser beam.

If i was going to go 7mm id go for a 7-375 ruger aka 7lrm. With a long throat you should be able to reach near 7 stw velocity but in a smaller package

Thanks for the detailed reply. I was thinking my existing magazine wouldn't work. But I think the smith can work this out to accommodate 175's or 185 VLD's. When you say the 270 has a partition what do you mean? I am not familar with what you are referencing?

How easily is brass available for the 7-375? Does Norma, Nosler or Hornady make it?

I think lefty is pretty well on the money, although I would want mine braked running 175 grain but it's a personal preference, as to what brand or type it depends if you shoot off the ground you would want something like a little bastard but if your in a tree stand or something the radial would work great, but if your looking at going a different route you might look at a 28 nosler seems like everyone is going to them so will be easier to find brass

Yeah I have to echo what Justin51 said, why would you ever consider the 7mm stw with the advent of 28 nosler???

Your action is also used for many other longer cartridges in Weatherbys lineup ,surely it would just take some parts swapping in your magazine well because it's factory blocked to work with the shorter case now chambered in your rifle , the 7 STW is so Legendary that Weatherby even chambered their rifles for it !, but maybe the OP knows that.

I purchased a stock Rem 700 7STW a couple years ago and shot the barrel out because I love shooting it so much. It's getting bedded as we speak, and the barrel is a 26" Carbon Six 1:8 twist in their Feather Weight contour. You'll want at least a 26" barrel and a Vias brake is great, and I recommend a brake. 160gr bullets (although I use 140-177gr bullets) and heavier is where this caliber really shines along with a 26" or more barrel. The 160's will kill elk, deer, antelope, etc. The STW likes jump, so you don't have to be close to the lands. I installed a Wyatts DM Box, but it only gives me 3.700" for a maximum COAL. It hasn't been an issue for me, but if you want to shoot the 195 Bergers, you'll want the ability to have a longer COAL. Brass is not a big deal to get a hold of anymore, and Nosler is the best of what's out there currently.
Talk to your gunsmith about the STW and the 28 Nosler. They are basically ballistic twins. You may not have to do too much work on it to switch to a 28 Nosler compared to the STW. If not, choice is yours. I love my STW

I didn't realize the ballistics for the STW was so close to the 28 Nosler. Given the shorter OAL of the 28 Nosler, I think it would be easier to go with the 28 Nosler case is as to avoid mods to the magazine as was suggested by a number of you.

Thanks for your input. Now time to talk to the smith.

Thanks again!

You couldn't hsve picked a better cartridge. Ditto on the 8 twist, particularly if you are going to use the 175, and up grain bullets.
I have have shot most weights, in various STW's, that I have owned. The most impressive was the 145lrx, Barnes bullet, driven to 3460, over RL25, and a 215 GMM primer. Flat, fast, and deadly, at any and all distances.
You can't go wrong with a AB, Nosler, 160 weight.
Barrel length, no less then 26, 27 is perfect.
IIf your not recoil sensitive, skip the brake, as its recoil, really isn't that bad. Nothing like an Ultra Mag.
Coal, is going to be pretty much whatever your box will allow, as most of the time, you won't be into the leade, anyway.
If, you are shooting Barnes bullets, they like to jump any way.
Get the best reamer you can find, PTG, or better, if there is such a thing.
Most of the better known barrel makers, are putting out good stuff. I like Brux, Lilja, Schneider!
Be fussy with your smith, there are some greats on this site, such a J.E. Custom, etc.
Enjoy the ride, and visit the 7STW Brotherhood on this site as well. There's a wealth of knowledge there to be had.
Enjoy!

I am very very big on Weatherby Mark Vs. I have um, some. Um, some more.

All it takes to go to the much longer case is to lengthen the bolt stop slot and the long action Wby 300 box, follower and spring. Simple as it can get.

Sorry I can't help with COAL
Up to Berger 195 EOL Elite Hunter, I'm in California and like copper.
So many makers but I prefer Bartlien, Benchmark and Pac-Nor
8 twist - no question
26" or more depending on how much you hike
Yes get a brake. Wear active/electronic in ear protection.
Oh man, so make makers of brakes.
Get as large a diameter/profile barrel as you can. If you are going to be hiking look at carbon or fluted to bring the weight down.

Thanks for the reply

I like the Mark V action as well. I am looking at having this set up to shoot the 195 EOL Elite Hunter too. It seems like an amazing combo! I appreciate the info on the magazine box. As you said very easy. I was looking at the Beast brake. Thinking of a Shilen SS number 4 barrel contour this comes in at 3lbs 14oz.

I have horses so most of the time not an issue. I hike but the majority of the time use the horses to get back where I need to be.

Thanks for the info!
