Savage rifles ... the most accurate out-of-the-box ?

I have owned six Savage rifles over the past 8 years. Rimfire and centerfire. They have all shot better then .5MOA, and have proven to be reliable and consistent. The only work done on one of them was taking 5 minutes to relieve the the tab that applied pressure to the forearm tip on a LRH. It improved from .5MOA to <.25MOA. I know of at least 20 other Savages owned by members of club that conducts 200/300 yard Egg Shoots. Experiences have been comparable to mine..

They are just so ugly. Shooters... yes. Lookers, nope. I wish they looked better. I would own a truckload. For me, I need to feel a bit of attachment/aesthetic pride? in a gun to really enjoy hunting with it.
 
Yeah, I know. No harm meant and apologies If I offended any. I wish I could get past the fact that I don't like the way they look. Price is right and the are great shooters.

LOL, this is why it took me 5 years to convert to a Savage guy. But they shoot outstanding and for a great price. I will handle mediocre looks for great performance. Remember I am talking about a rifle here not a women. :D
 
I've got a bunch of Savages and a buddy of mine has a few more. Between us we also have a few full custom rifles built on M70, Rem 700 actions. All of them will shoot 1/4 MOA or better as J. E. Custom was saying. The real secret though is what it costs to get them to do that. Those full customs were $5,000 give or take but the last Savage I bought was $314 at Cabela's (with veteran discount)- a model 12FV in 308 Win with cheapo plastic stock. I threw a Viper PST on it and from day one it has been crazy accurate no mater what kind of crappy ammo you put in it. That one is actually better than my prized full custom - so Savages can be one hell of a value. Eventually I did upgrade the stock to a Boyd's Prairie Hunter and though it is "better" it didn't really change how it shoots. And when you burn the barrel out it is easy to call up your favorite outfit and have them mail you a prefit barrel to slap on the action with no visit to the gunsmith required. What is not to love about that?

Nail on the head. This is exactly my experience as well.

All mass-produced factory rifles have the potential to be shooters, or lemons. It's all just luck of the draw.

If you want a 1/2 MOA rifle out of the box, the Remington 700 5R Milspec series is going to be nearly impossible to beat. The only downfall, is that the factory Remington triggers are horrendous (due to past legal issues), so you will want to replace the stock trigger with an aftermarket trigger ASAP. That being said, when my 5R .308 Win was 100% stock (even the stock trigger) it was shooting .2xx to .3xx groups at 100 yards with handloads. I have since swapped the trigger, and it shoots even better.

If you're paying $5,000 for a custom rifle to be built on a factory action, your gunsmith is really sticking it to you in the billing department.
