Retumbo for a 6.5x284 load

Definitely showing that bullet likes to jump in your gun. Did you chrony any of the speeds?? What is the gun (specs)?

I'd have to check but I think the 5 round group is 0.030 off the lands, I can't remember. We have a newborn at home and getting range time is hard enough!

No chronograph data yet, when I do ocw I'll bring the chrono out. It's a Savage long action with a Proof 28" with a mbm beast brake on it. No lie, this kicks less than my unbraked Grendel. I'm hoping this 56gr load with the 215m is close to 3000 already.

Here's the rifle. Weighs 9.8 pounds with out the bipod, unloaded. The brake isn't timed in this picture.

Couple quick questions:

I tried to run a comparison in quickload to my rifle, and it doesn't reflect the velocity everyone seems to be getting. The pressure is also very low at a little over 45,000 and the load is a little compressed. I'm new to quickload and maybe entering something wrong, just trying to verify the load before trying the Retumbo. My rifle has a 26" barrel and when seated .020 off the coal is 3.138.

Is velocity gain because the load is somewhat compressed?

Are there any issues to be concerned about with the compressed load (powder swell, seating depth issues)?

I have only been able to get to 2,900 using H4831sc before getting pressure.

Most reloading manuals as well as QL tends to understate the 6.5x284 load data. 56-57gr is just on the edge of none to slight compression using Retumbo with a Berger 140. Compression is not a factor in achieving the velocity., and should not be an issue seating .020" off the lands.

I am running the 143 ELD-X, lapua brass, and 56.3g retumbo in my 6.5x284. 26" barrel and getting about 3030 fps.

Which primer ?

56.3 your max for pressure or did you hit the accuracy sweetspot?

56.5 was my max.

Started testing today. Shot 5 shots through the Chrony. 26" Barrel. 142 SMK's seated .020 jump. 210M's. Lapua Brass. Temp was 53*.

56.5 - 2982
57 - 2989
57.5 - 3003
58 - 3016
58.5 - 3058 - Pressure; Heavy bolt and ejector mark.

Going to start load development next. .020 jump. Load 6) groups of 3 @ 55-57.5. Going in .5 grain increments.

Tried the Hornady 143 ELD-X. Accuracy, velocity, and ES is pretty close to the Berger 140 HVLD's in my Savage LRH(24" bbl). I would note that the Hornady(seated .040"OL) requires more seating pressure then the Bergers(.075"OL) and leaves a very slight ring/depression from the seater plug between the ogive and bullet tip indicating a softer jacket in the bullet nose area compared to the HVLD. This is consistent with testing this bullet my 6.5CM.
Comparison with my standard Berger load. Both groups(with cold bore) shot with the same scope setting/same day and conditions at 200 yards.
