Short Action Hunting Cartidge Help

I already have a custom 7mm Rem Mag on a Borden and a custom 300 RUM on a Surgeon so this will be a 300-400 yard MAX deer rifle mostly. This will be a smaller caliber round, 7mm at most...

Given stated use and users, no reason to look past the 243Win or a variant. It will do the job with lower recoil than larger caliber rounds. For the use you state I shoot a 243AI and am just working up a 6X45 for up to 300 for my daughter to use.

I would do 243 but I already have two of em. They're not customs by any means but they've been in my family for a long time. What about 6.5 Wby Mag aka 6.5 x 257 Wby?

Could go Sherman. Long is standard bolt face. My 6.5 Sherman drives a 140 Berger at 3339 fps out of a 28" Hart. 6.5 SS uses a magnum bolt face I believe.

If you don't reload the 260 or the 7/08 would be my recommendation.
Ammo and bras are available at most stores.

If you do reload, dies are very affordable for both. other cartridges are ok but brass and ammo can be harder to find.

I'll second the 7-.08. It is really underrated, and I'm really surprised I haven't bought or built one myself, being a "7mm" nut. Great bullet choices nowadays, with great bc's, and sd, as Well.
Good luck, the choices are fun.
