Single shot 35 whelen

That's good info. I'll either go that route or hold off. Got in touch with Henry and they did confirm they are expanding their caliber options in the near future on their single shots. They would neither confirm nor deny 35 whelen but it makes sense with the regs in a lot of southern states for primitive season.

I checked gallery of guns for the Ruger but only saw the no1. Heck of a rifle but the rest are under 400$ aside from the encore while the no1 is triple that. Bit rich for me

I shoot a .358x444 Improved in a contender that uses shortened 35 Whelen Imp dies.
Quite the bear! The brake it wears is a little abusive to bystanders. It's called .358 Alpo.
Been a whole lotta fun to shoot. Haven't hunted with it yet but could soon build the range confidence to carry that one afield.

gemihur I have a friend that bought a BUNCH of Contender's and barrels and reloading stuff in an estate sale of an old "wildcatter" of both Contenders as well as different rifles. One of the Contender pistol barrels he got sounds like your 358x444. It has been a while since he showed it to me but I think the 444 case was shortened a little then necked down to 358. This barrel does NOT have a muzzle brake on it. My friend was told by the widow of the fellow who owned it that he once killed a moose with it. My friend has never shot it.

RT,
Thanks for the vote of confidence on that one. A very powerful round.
I generally rely on my 6.5 Grendel barrel on most of my hunting. A real pleasure to shoot. Haven't run into many moose in the Blue Ridge mountains, tho.
If you friend should need to get rid of any wildcat barrels, I might be interested.
Thanks,
Jimmy
