.22 MAG too small for coyotes???

I have the savage b-mag bull barrel now, I had three of the pencil barrels and kept sending them back, the best 100 yard group with the best was about 1.65". The bull barrel got them down just under an inch, the Boyd's stock and some bedding has gotten it down to .5, if I do my part.
Good to know. Thanks for sharing your equipment selection and final accuracy results.

50 yards max for .22 WMR. Duly noted. I very much dislike wounding an animal and have it get away.

I chest shot one at 110yds and dropped him without so much as a twitch of movement, broadside thru the ribs just behind the shoulder with a W-W 40gr jacketed hollow point. 50yds would be abundantly adequate with a solid hit. FWIW

ICANHITHIMMAN,
Coyotes are tough customers and I do NOT recommend using anything in rimfire.

You mentioned having a pest problem. If they're being removed from the planet, then there's no such thing as overkill. Dead is dead.

After too many runners, I stepped up to a .25-06 and have yet to get anything other than DRT. If you talk to professional coyote hunters, they all use larger calibers to put them down...on the spot.

The 25-06 is my favorite coyote rifle. I use the Sierra 100 MK. Load it with IMR4831. Very accurate & most coyotes can be skinned.
Thanks, Kirk

I think for humane reasons the .22 mag round for coyotes should be a 40 grain bullet, either hollow point or polymer tip. 40 grains is the heaviest .22 mag bullet that
i've ben able to find.

When I was young my first rifle was a Lakefield 22 LR. All my money went toward bricks of 22 ammo. I when thru many a year. I became really proficient with it taking all types of game including coyotes and lord forgive me running coyotes and rabbits. Practice practice practice. 22 mag will kill coyotes at reasonable distance with proper shot placement. I now use 223, 6mm AI and 6.5-284. My off hand shooting is nowhere as good as it was back then either. HaHa

Why use a 22 mag for dogs when the world's best poodle shooter, the 223/5.56 NATO is readily available in so many configurations.

For humane reasons I feel the best .22 mag bullet is a 40 gr. bullet in either hollow point or polymer tip for best expansion.

I've mentioned what my .22 mag rifle's scope is (Bushnell 1.75 - 4X) but what do you guys use on a rifle of that cartridge?

Eric B.

PHORWATH, that's enough scope for a .22 mag.

I think my scope was purchased in the early '90s if I recall correctly. I like the diamond shaped open reticle center for fast shooting close up, as in squirrel hunting. I put the top of the diamond on squirrels (to aim low due to the angle) and it works very well.

1970s version Bushnell 2.5-8X ScopeChief IV. My hunting use of the .22Mag has been almost exclusively red fox. Only one coyote. Flattened him @ 110yds - like a pancake.

I've killed a few, ok a lot with a 22mag. My favorite load is Win superX 40 gr hollow points.
