I agree; they'll last for less than 600 rounds with the huge powder charges they use. Double the charge weight for a given caliber and barrel life drops to one fourth or less as many rounds.

The three .30-.338 Win. Mag. barrels I wore out shooting 'em once every minute or so for 20 to 30 minutes lasted about 1200 rounds each. But they burned 50% more powder that a .308 Win. and that's the reason their barrel life was so short. Folks shooting 7mm Rem. Mag's the same way got about 800 rounds of barrel life.

something i am finding out the hard way is that no matter which caliber you choose as far as stocks or triggers or bases and rings or anything else to do with building or customizing a rifle the manufacturers act like the rem 700 is the only gun ever built. The selection of all aftermarket parts is endless. Heaven help you if you choose to build an Interarms, Mauser, Browning, Ruger etc.

I know there are alot of people that like the 300 RUM but the truth about the 7RUM vs the 300RUM when compared for bullet weights of equal the 7RUM will out preform the 300RUM past 300 yrds and futher out. I just went to the remington page and done some comparsions. Also using a BC calculator the 7mmREM will is outpreforming the 300RUM at 850 yrds and futher out. Its all about the BC of the bullet you shoot. All these were 150 grain swift scirocco bullets for the comparsion and using the remington stated volicities.

I decided to get the 7RM X-Bolt

I finally bought a .338 EDGE barrel and can't wait to start building my rifle. The idea is to have this put together:
Rem 700 SS Action
27" Broughton 5C Barrel with DE muzzle break
Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist Style 5 Fully Adjustable Stock
Jewell Trigger
Wyatt's trigger guard & magazine
Harris Bipod
Vortex Viper PST FFP 6-24X50 mrad
Hart 20 MOA base & rings (Maybe I'll stick with the warn combo).

The Remington 7XX action's popularity started in the 1950's when benchresters wanted something better than Mauser actions for their accuracy gambling game. Remington came out with their .222 Rem. cartridge in the 722 rifle and when fit with a decent heavy barrel, it shot the pants off anything fired from a Mauser action. And one could buy a Rem. 722 barreled action dirt cheap, too. Their triggers could be easily reworked down to a 2 or 3 ounch pull weight. Those round receivers were easy to sleeve in a rectangular aluminum block so they wouldn't twist out of good epoxy bedding fit when more powerful cartridges were used. And the fact that Remington's barrels were the most accurate of all the factory ones for decades helped their popularity.

I'm looking for some load data for the new berger 195 for my 7mm ultra mag, powders I have are u869,retumbo,reloader 25m 50bmg and 7828ssc. Have any starting loads for any of my powders.

When comparing several cartridges of the same caliber, it helps to use SAAMI's info that's based on acceptable standards:

Compare those 7mm cartridge's pressure, bullet weight and muzzle velocities.

One thing for sure regarding barrel life, the more powder burned to shoot a given bullet weight out with the same pressure across several cartridges, the faster the barrel will wear out.

I'm having 7MM RUM issues. Dug out a rifle I've had for years and didn't have time to work with. Can't help but feel it is a good cartridge, treated correctly. I've been shooting 162 AMAX at about 3270 FPS with less than 1 MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yds using 92.2 grs. of Retumbo. Problem is when I move out to 400 yds or so things get really scattered. In using it for a LR hunting rifle seating longer bullets out far enough as recommended is tough to get them to feed. Has anybody had better luck with lighter bullets, ie. Swift 150 gr. Scirroco etc? Help suggestions would be appreciated.

Nothing g wrong with either ! It's only a couple of hundred fps...one you can shoot as much as you want and the other you can dream about shooting and finding casings !! Those fps are worthless unless your killin' past 700 yards anyway

Spend some time on the 7 STW thread. It's what convinced me to get that caliber when I was contemplating on which 7mm caliber I wanted to purchase. I have been so happy with my 7 STW, that's it's become one of my favorite rifles. Absolute tack driver and recoil is less than my 30-06. There's a reason it has its own forum. Buy one and you'll fall in love with it too!! There's a reason Nosler designed the 28 Nosler, since it's basically the ballistic twin of the 7 STW, which is another caliber to consider.
