Ejected spent case hitting windage knob, falling back into chamber...?

So "IS" this a common problem....??? I want the scope as low as possible.

This is my question to LEUPOLD:

What is the height of the lens cover for the objective lens on the
52mm tip-up lens cover (top to bottom-centered over barrel).....???
Also Will "LOW" rings work mating the VX-6 HD 4-24X 52mm Obj.
(Including lens cover) on Remington model 85197 (This has varmint
barrel- .830 Diameter at muzzle) Thank you for the help.

David,

Low Rings or even Medium Rings will NOT work with a VX-6HD scope, mostly because the adjustments are larger in diameter (20-MOA per revolution vs 15-MOA), and if the scope is mounted too low, a spent case will hit the windage adjustment and fall back into the receiver port when working the bolt. Go with High Rings.

What? Leupolds response makes no sense to me.

Do you have a Sako or m16 extractor? If not, I wouldn't worry about it. I have used .88" Badger rings on Badger bases for years with Leupold M3s, Leupold 50mm 8.5x25 and Nightforce 50mm NXS and have never had one hit with a one piece base and target turrets. You have a Sako or M16 extractor you might have issues.

NO.......and this scope has "LOW" Turrets. I am hoping some guys with the same or nearly same set-up jump into this conversation. The Rem. 85197 is just a "Pimped" version of the M-24.

I have used .88" Badger rings on Badger bases for years with Leupold M3s, Leupold 50mm 8.5x25 and Nightforce 50mm NXS and have never had one hit with a one piece base and target turrets. You have a Sako or M16 extractor you might have issues.

This happened to me with Badger rings and base and a Schmidt Bender scope w/ 50mm objective. I don't know what height rings but the obj bell w scope cap was only about 1-2mm above the barrel. I fixed it by moving the rings on the base but I fortunately had an adj butt pad to compensate for moving the rings.

did you have the cross bolt heads on the ejector side?
 
Not sure what u mean.

The 1/2" nuts that you tighten to secure the rings to the base, we're they on the same side as the ejection port or the opposite side? I ask because if they were on the same side as the ejection port and the. if heads were above the port at any point the brass could have been hitting the nut.
 
Is there more to your email to Leupold or am I just missing something? The title to this thread and your question to Leupold are two different things, and their response goes along with the title. You question sounds like a scope to barrel clearance issue.
Their response may be right on track if you are having a problem with a shell (that is being ejected) striking the windage turret before it can clear (or have enough momentum to clear) the ejection port. The solution is to move the scope (up-down-fore-aft), change the type of extractor (and hope it'll change the angle of ejection), use a different scope, or run the **** out of the bolt and see if that works:))).
 
This is a project that is under assembly. I have in my possession the rifle. I have ordered the LEUPOLD VX-6 HD 4-24X scope and it was mailed today 12/8/2017.

I have "NO" rings as yet, I am shopping for rings, and gathering information about rings. So.......there has not been any issue because I don't even have the scope. My question to LEUPOLD was, as stated, "Can I use low rings".

Their response was that I needed high rings because of spent case impacting the windage turret. Given that this scope has "LOW" turrets, I find their response pretty strange. I think he did not really know the turret length or turret diameter. I simply wonder if anyone else has ever encountered this issue because of Turret Diameter.

Then I totally read this whole thread wrong...at least the intent of it.
 
What Fatboy was pointing out, is that it is a known issue common with aftermarket extractor like the Sako and Mini-16 style. They throw the brass higher than the factory extractor.

You may or may not experience this problem with your factory extractor.
 
There must be fifty million scopes in use with 50mm objective lens, and maybe one or two million rifles with bull or varmint diameter barrels. There has to be someplace that knows if I can or can't use low rings.
 
With a 50mm+ diameter objective lens (and then factor in the scope tube and caps) I wouldn't count on low's working. That's a rather large scope, 34mm tube and all. There also may be a variance in the height of the saddle from one scope ring manufacturer to another.
Another problem that come into account is the actual diameter of the power ring diameter on a variable power scope. I have this problem with a 30mm Vortex scope on my .338. Low rings will not allow the eyepiece (ocular lens) end of the scope to sit flush in the rear ring. I have to use medium rings and that leaves at least a half inch gap over the barrel. This is with a 44mm objective lens scope, may not happen with your 52mm. However the tube diameter difference may offset the objective difference.
Your rail/mount can also play a role in this. Depending on it's height and cant.
