Berger VLD performance on bone question...

I never could get the LRX's to shoot well. The TTSX I like for hogs out of the .223. They will most certainly punch bones, even the biggest and heaviest bones well.

I prefer the Peregrine VRG4 and VLR though for everything else because of the exceptional controlled expansion.

Play with seating depth and check twist rate. Might need a faster twist. Getting sub moa out to1000 with the 338 lapua. All it need was a seating depth change.

They seem to have done better with the larger diameter and heavier bullets. I tried them in the 7mm STW and 300 Rum and tried everything I could think of. Just couldn't get them to shoot well in four different rifles.

I just kept going back to the Hornady Interbond but then of course they quit producing them for a few years while they were gearing up for the hoped for big rush on their new bullet line.

Ultimately I stumbled on the Peregrines while I was in Africa and I've been very pleased since.

Just got back from and elk hunt using bergers. Brother shot a real nice 6x6 through the shoulder at 402 yards using a 175 berger vld in his 308. Bullet had a 1" exit just behind the opposite shoulder.
2 other 6x6s were taken using my 300 win and the 215 berger. One through the shoulders led to an instant collapse and the other through the lungs. Lung shot elk was dead before 2nd shell was chambered. They worked as advertised.

Got lucky. Plus you were shooting further distance. Try that up close and watch them blow up.

I just returned from an elk hunt. Shot a 320 class 6x6 bull @ 450 with 175 bergers. 7mm rem mag @ 2900 fps. Absolutely destroyed the front shoulders, neck, and part of the backstraps. Died for sure but personally I am DONE with bergers

That's why i quit using them after the first and last time I used them. Shot a small whitetail in Az and lost have of it. Went back to Barnes and never looked back. Can get moa or less out of mine and customers rifles. Use a hunting bullet not a target bullet.

Just returned from a week of elk hunting. My son took his 1st elk, a big cow at 100 yards with a 215 Hybrid. Impact velocity was 2800 fps +/- , wrecked both lungs and left a 1" exit hole . She took a few steps and fell stone dead, almost zero meat damage. After we got back we took 2 deer at 230 yards with a 140 VLD out of my 6.5x284 , bang , flop on both bucks. Substantial meat damage to both bucks due to shot placement, both hit square through the shoulders.

I was on the fence on Bergers so let a couple friends test them during shared hunts to observe the results before deciding. My observation was that they either penciled through or grenaded, with no consistency or predictability. Sticking with my AMAX/ELD/Accubonds.

There is no reason for a 270 to blow the leg and shoulder off an antelope, literally. What a waste of meat.

Unfortunately that's very similar to my experience with them although I did have a few just pencil through too.

It's a good company lead by very good people but I won't shoot their bullets at game.

Had customers kill 4 elk this last weekend with 215 Berger's out of 30 Noslers, clean hole in and internals wreckage with an exit, they'll never go back to Barnes!! I'll take a small percentage more loss on the wound vs loosing whole animals because of small wound channels and deflections common to Barnes any day.

Never had that problem with Barnes. Always wrecks the internals and exits. The reason for the small exit hole is due to the way there designed. Petals fold over and bullet keeps driving throu. Have used most if not all of the different style of bullets out there. Tried the Barnes and never looked back. Have killed plenty of animals with them over the last 20 years. One shot done.
